G4 bootloops are caused by hardware issue, LG vows to repair affected units

Many owners of the LG G4 have complained about a bootloop issue, but so far without receiving any assistance whatsoever from the Korean smartphone maker. Well, that’s finally changed.

LG has now acknowledged the bootloop issue, and after a thorough investigation has concluded that a hardware problem is to blame. Specifically, the bootloops are caused by a “loose contact between components”.

The company has vowed to fix the problem for affected devices, with no additional cost for its customers of course. It turns out that the G4 units experiencing this are not from one particular retail partner – they can be among those sold by carriers, or third-parties.

LG advises people who own handsets affected by the issue to contact the carrier they purchased it from (if that’s the case) or a nearby LG service center to make the necessary arrangements for repair. It’s also apologized for having previously wrongly diagnosed this issue for certain…

Microsoft Lumia 650 goes up for pre-order even though it’s not official yet

Last we heard anything about it, the upcoming Microsoft Lumia 650 was supposedly delayed until mid-February (from its initial launch time frame of early next month). Now though, as you wait for it to finally become official after a huge number of leaks, you can already pre-order one if you so wish.

It turns out that UK-based online retailer MobileFun has the yet-unannounced handset up for pre-order. It’s priced at £199, SIM-free and unlocked of course.

Unfortunately the company doesn’t mention a shipping date for the Lumia 650, but we assume it can’t happen much later than the aforementioned mid-February time frame.

The listing comes with a full spec list as you’d expect, so the phone’s innards have been confirmed yet again. It has a 5-inch 720p IPS touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 1.1 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 2,000 mAh battery. It runs Windows 10 Mobile, naturally. It weighs…

OLED Displays Finally Go Mainstream As A CES 2016 Bright Spot For Notebooks

This year’s CES show is all but in the rear view mirror at this point but there was a common theme among notebook manufacturers that you may have missed if you weren’t paying attention. For years now, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology has helped to deliver arguably some of the best smartphone display experiences in handsets. Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology came first and others like Google’s Nexus 6P, Motorola’s Droid Turbo 2 and Microsoft’s Lumia 950 series more recently have followed suit. Side-by-side, if you hold an OLED display-equipped phone next to a standard IPS display device, even of course Apple’s iPhone Retina display, the differences are stark. Brightness levels are superior, even in daylight, while contrast, saturation and color balance generally are significantly better with an OLED display. OLED displays have much more pop, with deep blacks and brighter whites. They also have much faster pixel response times at under 1ms. On the other hand, manufacturing large OLED displays gets expensive, so until recently they’ve been relegated to small screen sizes like 5 to 6-inch smartphones. However, that dynamic seems to be changing and manufacturing processes for building them are getting more efficient at scale. And the good news is the next mainstream adoption of OLED display technology looks like it will come to notebooks very soon.
