Rendimiento: dos tablets capaces de todo

Estamos ante dos tablets que destacan por potencia bruta. En este aspecto, la SHIELD K1 saca algo de ventaja gracias a su GPU Kepler de 192 núcleos. Tenemos evidencias de esto a la hora de probar los juegos. La SHIELD K1 se mueve sin ningún tipo de problema y con una soltura que nos recuerda a videoconsolas de generación anterior.

Por su parte, la Mi Pad 2 no se queda muy atrás. La experiencia con los juegos no es tan exquisita, pero su procesador Intel de última generación le permite mover absolutamente todo lo que le pidamos con soltura. Te decidas por la que te decidas, el rendimiento no será ningún problema.

Acabado y diseño: un claro ganador

Aquí sin ninguna duda declaramos ganadora a la Mi Pad 2. Su calidad de construcción, su acabado en aluminio, su ligereza y su peso la ponen muy por delante de la SHIELD K1. Esta última opta por materiales más clásicos como el plástico, en el cual las huellas quedan bastante marcadas.

Es importante recalcar las diferencias entre las relaciones de pantalla. La Xiaomi Mi pad 2 cuenta con una relación de tamaño 4:9, es decir, una tablet no tan alargada (estilo Ipad). Esto supone una ventaja a la hora de trabajar con ella y visualizar contenido como películas o vídeo.

La SHIELD K1 mantiene el formato 16:9, con lo que tenemos una tablet muy rectangular y alargada. El objetivo de este formato es poder disfrutar mejor de la experiencia jugable en formato panorámico, pero para todo lo demás no es el formato más adecuado. Piénsate bien qué es lo que necesitas de cada tablet, porque este puede ser un factor crucial.

Autonomía: dos buenos exponentes

Ninguna de las dos tablets va a suponerte un problema hablando de autonomía. Sin embargo, los 6190 mAh de la Xiaomi se notan en el uso diario y le permiten sacar ventaja sobre su rival. La NVIDIA tampoco se queda corta con sus 5200 mAh, que te permitirán jugar durante un más que aceptable número de horas.

Pantalla y audio: diferencias muy marcadas

Victoria absoluta de la Xiaomi en cuanto a la pantalla. Esta es espectacular, encontramos la misma resolución que vemos en el Ipad Air 2 de Apple. Colores vívidos, muchísima nitidez y un equilibrio general increíble. La pantalla de la NVIDIA es más que aceptable, buena interpretación de colores y un nivel de brillo bastante bueno.

En cuanto al audio la vencedora es la SHIELD K1. Encontramos un nivel de audio muy alto y nítido, lo que hará de nuestra experiencia con los juegos algo asombroso. Por su parte la Xiaomi tiene un sonido más plano, con algo menos de volumen. No obstante, se defiende bien para el precio que tiene.

Software: Android Stock vs Miui

Hace poco te contábamos por qué Android puro ya no es la mejor opción para tu dispositivo. Uno de los motivos era que si no tienes un terminal Nexus debes esperar meses para actualizar. En este caso NVIDIA es de las pocas marcas que actualiza incluso antes que algunos terminales Nexus, con lo cual esto no será un problema

Por su parte, la Mi Pad 2 cuenta con una de las mejores capas de personalización que encontramos en Android. Hablamos de Miui V6 corriendo bajo Android 5.1 Lollipop. Esta capa destaca por su fluidez, mayores opciones de personalización y por un diseño bastante más cuidado que Android stock.

Creemos que tu objetivo con una tablet probablemente sea que te dure unos cuantos años más que el móvil. En este caso, optar por la NVIDIA SHIELD es un seguro de vida, ya que tendrás garantizado que tu producto actualizará bien y pronto durante por lo menos un par de años.

Conclusiones: dos productos muy diferentes y recomendables

Quizás para un usuario medio la Mi Pad 2 sea la mejor opción. Decantarse por la NVIDIA SHIELD es una decisión que deberías tomar si estás pensando en una tablet cuyo uso principal sea el gaming. De todas formas, elegir cualquiera de las dos es una muy buena decisión.

Mysterious all-metal Nokia resurfaces in a new set photos

2016 seems to hold particular promise for Nokia and its return to the smartphone market. If you don’t remember, the Microsoft buyout of the Finish’s Titan’s mobile business involved a non-compete clause that prevented the company from releasing smartphones under the Nokia brand. That expired on December 31, 2015 and eager fans can hardly contain their excitement at the possibility of new Nokia handsets. One possible candidate for a 2016 release surfaced in leaked shots a few weeks ago and now it would appear another round of photos of the same model has made it online as well.

If there is one definitive aspect about the design of the handset in question is that it is very boxy, but not necessarily in a bad way, especially considering the all-metal body, disrupted only by a pair of antenna lines on the back.

Other controls that can be spotted on the phone are a volume rocker on the left side and below it the power button. On the flip side, we find something that resembles a well isolated cover, possibly for the SIM tray and microSD card slot. This could hint at some IP rating, but we wouldn’t get our hopes too high.

It is also interesting to note that the newly pictured phone seems to be a different unit, as it lacks the prototype marking of the first one. This does add a bit to the authenticity of the leak and could mean that the device in question is really one of the three new Nokia smartphones, allegedly heading towards a release this year.

Mimicker Alarm from Microsoft Garage is a playful way to wake up

Playful and fun-loving aren’t the terms that I would typically associate with Microsoft, but the Mimicker Alarm app comes from Microsoft Garage — they produce projects in small teams distributed throughout Microsoft, like Google Labs does inside of Google — which is perhaps where they keep all the zanier folk.

So what exactly is the Mimicker Alarm app? You will no doubt be shocked to hear that it is an app designed to wake you up in the morning. Setting up the alarm looks very much like any other alarm app, and it adheres well to Material Design principles for those that value that kind of thing. Where it departs from the run of the mill alarm app is when that alarm goes off. You can snooze for five minutes, but as soon as you dismiss the alarm you are given 30 seconds to complete a challenge.

In order to make sure that you not only wake up, but actually stay awake, the Mimicker Alarm app forces you to play a game with it in order to shut it off. “Game” is perhaps a strong term for what the app asks you to do; tasks can vary from making a specific expression at your camera, taking a picture of something that matches a specific color or repeating back a tongue twister. The point is that they require you to focus on a task and likely long enough that you will be forced out of your restful state and be ready to face the day.

The game relies on Microsoft’s Project Oxford, which you may have seen previously powering things like How-Old.net, which attempted to identify the users age from a photo, or the TwinsOrNot.net site that logically enough tried to compare two photos and identify whether they are of twins (or the same person).

The main intent of this app, as with previous projects leveraging Project Oxford, is to show off the capabilities of the APIs. It is entirely open source, with the code available on GitHub. This is a useful and clever app that you can download for free if you are looking to change up your morning wake up routine.
