Don’t Let Vendor Lock-In Fears Devalue Your Cloud Initiative

There is a pattern I keep seeing in large enterprises when it comes to their cloud strategies. Many organizations are very concerned about being locked into a single public cloud vendor. To counter that concern, they refrain from using most or any of the IaaS provider’s managed services, or any services other than the basic compute, network, and storage. They say they’re trying to prevent a long reengineering effort if they ever changed providers. But is this just another case of IT wanting to be in control?

Microsoft Announces Surface Pro Power Cable Recall Program

Reports began circulating yesterday that Microsoft intended to launch a recall of Surface Pro power cords due to concerns about overheating. The rumor suggested that Microsoft would unveil the details of the program on Friday morning, but Microsoft beat that estimate by a day and announced the official recall program this morning.

Kickstarter finally has an Android app

Amazingly, Kickstarter has not so far had an Android app. Yet starting today that’s changed, with the crowdfunding service launching Kickstarter for Android in the Google Play Store. That’s almost three whole years after the same happened for iOS.

The app is free, as you’d expect, and it lets you browse through projects more easily than the website. Obviously you can pledge to support whatever sounds good to you straight from the app.

You also get updates on projects you’ve already backed, and you can see what your friends are backing – to get some new ideas perhaps. Kickstarter boasts that its users have so far pledged over $2 billion using the platform, and that number will probably keep on…
