Why Do Many Minorities Avoid Science?

Dr. Martin Luther King’s holiday juxtaposed with an interesting number that I heard at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference last week inspired this article. While at the conference, results from a survey of the Society’s nearly 14,000 members revealed that only 2.1% of the membership is African American. Other minority numbers were even lower.
