Air Purifier Scandal Clouds Xiaomi’s New Year

What a difference a year makes. It was almost exactly this time last year that smartphone sensation Xiaomi was king of the world, after closing a major new funding round that valued the company at a lofty $45 billion just five years after its founding. That was the last time Xiaomi boasted of its high valuation, and since then the company’s name has become more associated with marketing snafus, product delays and minor scandals involving issues like false advertising.

US Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact are not getting fingerprint readers

The Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact are coming to the US, but their fingerprint reader must have been confiscated by the TSA. You read that right, the US versions of Sony’s flagships will lack the security-focused sensor.

True, they will still bring a new chipset (Snapdragon 810, up from S801) and the new generation camera… but an Xperia Z3 can be snatched right now for $360 or so, well below the $600 the Z5 will cost. The Xperia Z3 Compact is $360 on Amazon too, while the Z5 Compact will go for $500.

Los códigos promocionales para regalar apps llegan a Google Play

Buenas noticias para todos los usuarios Android y desarrolladores. Por fin, tras muchos años, Google Play ha integrado los códigos promocionales, algo que en la tienda de aplicaciones de Apple existe desde siempre. Esto significa que los desarrolladores de aplicaciones podrán ofrecer a los usuarios códigos con los que conseguir su aplicación gratis, o también contenido integrado de forma gratuita.

Por ejemplo, puede resultar útil para que los desarrolladores puedan **promocionar mejor su app en campañas como la de Navidad, en la que con un código, los usuarios puedan canjearlo para conseguirla gratis, o tener acceso al contenido in-app que normalmente sería de pago.

Google Play ya tiene códigos promocionales, pero con limitaciones

Desde luego, la noticia es muy positiva para todos, aunque eso sí, estos códigos promocionales están bastante limitados. Al menos por el momento, los desarrolladores solo podrán ofrecer 500 códigos por trimestre, que podrán dividir si lo desean en compras de la aplicación o compras in-app –en este caso se debe integrar “In-App Promotions” en la aplicación–, pero eso sí, no podrán ser usados para suscripciones. Cabe destacar que los códigos que no se utilicen en un trimestre se perderán, es decir, no son acumulables para el siguiente.

Cada código solamente podrá ser utilizado una vez, y podrá tener una validez máxima de un año, aunque los desarrolladores podrán ajustarla a menos tiempo. Además, también podrán pausar la promoción cuando deseen, reanudarla en cualquier momento incluyendo o no modificaciones, o anularla para siempre. Por último, está habilitado un historial en el que se podrán ver todas las promociones realizadas hasta el momento, tanto las activas como las finalizadas.

Por ahora, Google no ha dado más detalles sobre los códigos promocionales, que por otra parte, parece que ya pueden comenzar a usarse. Si tenéis una aplicación publicada en Google Play, en la consola para desarrolladores ya encontraréis una nueva pestaña, la de “Promociones”.

Coolpad ivvi i Plus has an all-metal, 5.5mm body

A year ago the Coolpad ivvi K1 Mini was the “world’s thinnest smartphone” at 4.7mm, now the company has another slender model – the Coolpad ivvi i Plus. At 5.5mm it’s not as thin, but it upgrades several of the key specs.

The phone has an all-metal body that comes in Silver, Gold and Pink. It has a 5″ 720p screen, Snapdragon 410 chipset, a big upgrade in memory compared to the K1 Mini (3GB of RAM and 32GB storage).

It’s compatible with 3G and LTE networks in China, but there’s no word on whether it will branch out abroad. In China it will cost CNY 2,000 ($300/€280), so it’s not exactly cheap. The battery capacity is unknown at the…
