Don’t Hire That Director Of Analytics!

Don’t get me wrong. The Director of Analytics serves an important role in any organization. The analytics director is charged with:
Laying out a strong analytics agenda to pinpoint which of the hundreds of questions that can be asked of data should be answered, and why;
Building a strong, independent analytics team, ideally integrated with the business functions they serve, and establishing a cross-organization data-driven decision-making process. (More on this in chapter 8 of my book Behind Every Good Decision, where I discuss the optimal organizational structure.)
Enabling self-serve access to the right data for all individuals in the organization, from analysts and marketing and product professionals to executives.
