Cuántas veces no habremos escuchado que los teléfonos de Apple no necesitan procesadores de 8 núcleos ni cantidades ingentes de memoria RAM para funcionar igual o incluso mejor que un Android. O eso de que iOS no necesita tanta maquinaria para moverse a las mil maravillas. Sin embargo, aunque tienen un procesador de “solo” dos núcleos y “solo” 2 GB de RAM, no parece que el iPhone 6s ni el iPhone 6s Plus estén faltos de potencia precisamente.
Al menos según AnTuTu, el famoso test que mide el rendimiento de nuestros positivos, que por primera vez, a partir de su versión 6.0, también mide el rendimiento de dispositivos iOS. En su ránking de los smartphones más potentes de todo 2015, los teléfonos más recientes de la compañía de la manzana se sitúan en primera posición, y además con mucha diferencia.
Como podréis comprobar en el gráfico que sigue a continuación, el iPhone 6s (y el 6s Plus) supera por mucho al segundo clasificado –unos 40.000 puntos de diferencia–, el magnífico Huawei Mate 8, que por cierto hemos podido probar en el CES de Las Vegas. Le siguen el Meizu Pro 5, otra bestia parda, y los dos terminales de Samsung más potentes hasta la fecha, el Galaxy Note 5, y el Galaxy S6 edge+.
Completan los 10 primeros puestos el iPhone 6 Plus –único terminal de 2014 en este ránking–, el OnePlus 2, el Letv 1Pro, el Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, y el Google Nexus 6P cierra la lista.
Lógicamente, este tipo de test hay que tomárselos como lo que son, simples pruebas de rendimiento que en ningún momento deberían ser clave para decidirse por uno u otro smartphone. Aunque la diferencia pueda parecer muy grande, a la hora de la verdad, es decir, usando los dispositivos, estos diez teléfonos y muchos otros nos ofrecerán un funcionamiento similar en cualquier tarea. Otra cosa serán las diferencias propiciadas por el software, aspecto en el que el hardware puro y duro poco o nada tiene que ver en cuestiones de rendimiento.

Typical HP. My year-old HP printer indicated that three of its five inkjet cartridges were empty. I shlep to Costco, pay $110 for color and black cartridges, rush home to install them and finish my urgent print job, and the printer won’t operate because of an error message. I call the company’s help desk. The rep, who by the way tells me he is overseas, asks a few qualifying questions. Anything he suggests I do I’ve either already tried with no success or it won’t work when I try it now. He’s clearly in over his head. When I question if he understands what’s going on, he pompously tells me he will have this fixed within five minutes. Ten minutes later, he advises me that the printer is broken and out-of-warranty, and tries to sell me a new unit over the phone in which he’ll “throw in free inkjet cartridges.” I ask: “You mean like the ones that come free already when I buy the same printer you’re pushing for half the price at Costco?” No, he insists, and then admits he doesn’t know what Costco is. I have a half-hour invested in this idiot, and politely hang up. I return the new cartridges to Costco where the clerk hears my story and avers “HP customer service is a joke. I would never call them.” My solution: I fill up the three empty cartridges at Costco’s photo desk for $30 and they now work fine. Guess my printer isn’t broken after all, Mr. Pompous. This is not my first or even fifth time dealing with unknowledgable HP reps, for what it’s worth.

Many express doubt about the success of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, yet those two seemed to have a successful holiday season. Shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday night, some lucky Powerball player might receive a life-changing windfall of cash. I don’t need to nag about how unlikely that lucky player is going to be you.
