The list of Nexus devices that won’t be officially receiving the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update was revealed back in September last year. Included in the list was the Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung, which was launched back in November 2012.
If you’re one of those Nexus 10 users who’d like to experience the latest Android version on your device, here is some good news: alternative Android OS developer Cyanogen has released the Marshmallow-based CyanogenMod 13 nightly for the tablet.
The build weighs in at over 250MB. However, before you grab and start flashing it, keep in mind that nightly builds aren’t usually stable – you may encounter bugs. Plus, installing them can not only result in a bricked device, but also void your handset’s warranty.

Let’s try to put CES into perspective. It was probably the largest in history, with over 170,000 attendees. About a third of the attendees were from overseas (thanks for the boost to the domestic economy!). We collectively trawled through 3800 exhibitors and traversed 2.5 million square feet of exhibition space. And there were untold meetings at hotel suites offsite.
Some time ago we caught word via a neighborhood watch group that some crooks were getting clever in our area and stealing things like garage door openers and car registrations. So, I did the obvious thing and started carrying my garage door opener with me but it wasn’t as convenient as it sounded initially. When I got home, I always had to fish around for it in my bag. Or on the weekends when I wasn’t carrying my work bag around with me, I had to remember to get it from my bag and bring it with me. It wasn’t a HUGE issue, but it wasn’t ideal either. What if I could just open and close my garage with my phone? My phone is always on my person and has a security code to get into. Controlling my garage with my phone sounds secure and convenient.
Well, you can control your garage door with your phone and there are several different ways to do it. About a year ago I tried to do it with a bluetooth headset but I could never get it to work. Wink was gracious enough to provide me with the GoControl Smart Garage Door Controller and I have loved it. It requires the Wink Hub and App which I recently reviewed.
GoControl Smart Garage Door Controller
The GoControl Smart Garage Door Controller is a connected device that allows you to make your current dumb garage door opener smart. You can monitor and use your current garage door from where ever you have a data connection. It communicates via Z-Wave to your Wink Hub at ranges from 30-50 ft. The device will also act as a Z-Wave repeater in your mesh network. Something to note: The GoControl Garage Door Controller I reviewed has a Linear logo on it. In 2014, Nortek re-branded its Linear security group as the Nortek Security & Control Group, which includes the GoControl product line. So my review unit is a GoControl unit with just different branding than what’s on Wink.com.
Setup was a bit more difficult than I expected because I expected the hardware to replace the physical garage door button in the garage, but it doesn’t. As you can see in the photos, the GoControl Contoller is actually made to be placed near the garage door opener. So, installation takes some preparation and a ladder. It does come with all the instructions needed, but I want you to have the heads up so you know what you’re getting into. The Wink website isn’t that descriptive.
First, I used a piece of cardboard to trace where I needed to drill holes on my garage ceiling. I drilled the ceiling and installed the included drywall screws. I then installed the GoControl Controller in the ceiling and installed the wires in the garage door opener.
The GoControl Controller has some tricks up its sleeve. It comes with a tilt sensor that needs to be physically installed on the door. It’s battery powered unit and tells the GoControl Controller whether your garage door is open or closed. So when you use your Wink App, you can see if your door is currently open or closed and when that last use happened.
Like all the Wink connected products, the Wink App walks you through connecting the GoControl controller to the Wink Hub. You are supposed to have the controller and tilt sensor installed prior to connection to the Wink Hub. When prompted by the Wink Ap, all you need to do is press the pairing button on the side of the GoControl Controller to pair. The GoControl unit LED will then flash three times and beep three times. After that, you’re ready to control your garage door from your phone.
From the Wink App menu, you will now have a category listed as “Garage Doors”. When you select the Garage Doors category, you will then see your connected garage doors. Here you can visually see if your garage door is open or closed and how long ago it was last used thanks to the fancy tilt sensor. To open the garage door you swipe up on the garage door on the app and you swipe down to close. My only complaint with the whole Wink-GoControl Garage Controller experience is this part. Sometimes after the garage door is well open or closed, the visual of the garage door within the Wink app is still updating and doesn’t allow action for some time. I wish it was quicker to update to make it more usable. However, I rarely access my garage door within the Wink App anyway. I created shortcuts within the Wink App to open and close the garage so I can use this function via my Android device home screen.
When you open or close the garage door using the GoControl controller, the controller flashes and beeps for several seconds to notify people around that the garage door will be moving. So, it does take a few seconds longer to open the door compared to the standard buttons. Also, there’s a 30 second waiting period between uses. So if you didn’t mean to open or close your garage door, you have to wait a bit to get the job done. It’s a slight inconvenience but has never really been an issue for me. It’s not something I run into often.
How I use the connected GoControl Smart Garage Door Controller
Unfortunately because the garage may be an easy access to your home and therefore a security risk, there are some home automation tasks where you cannot include the GoControl Garage Door Controller. For example, you cannot add a shortcut to IFTTT that includes opening or closing the garage door. It won’t let you. I tried.
However, there are a couple of great ways the connected garage door can be used:
I have an “Away Mode” shortcut on my home screen that I can select when I leave my house. It closes my garage door, turns on security notifications, turns off all of the lights, and puts my thermostat in away mode.
Thanks to the tilt sensor, Wink knows when your garage door is opened or closed and can pay attention to how long it has been open. So, within the settings for the garage door within the Wink App, you can specify if you’d like the Wink App to notify you if it’s been open for longer than a given amount of time. I love this feature. You’ll never forget that you left your garage door open again. Maybe you’ve never done that, but I have.
Last, this is both a blessing and a curse, but you can access your garage from anywhere you have an internet connection. So, one day my wife walked my son to school and left the keys home because she could. She closed the garage door with her phone. Everything was dandy. Then before she got home her phone died and she was locked out. No biggie. She went to a neighbors home and called me. I opened the garage door from work and everything was still dandy. So a lesson was learned about the downfalls of a connected home, but the upsides are also evident.

While there was no word on the device in question, there’s high probability that we’ll see a Pink color variant of the Xperia Z5 being unveiled, as there have already been rumors that the new color version will be announced this month.
The new device could also be the recently leaked Xperia phone (shown below) which apparently comes in a color similar to the Rose Gold seen in the newest iPhones. It is said to be a part of the company’s Xperia C series of smartphones.
Normalmente en Andro4all os traemos dispositivos como teléfonos, tablets e incluso relojes inteligentes. Pocas veces os solemos traer algo que realmente pueda llamar la atención ni algo curioso o diferente. Por lo menos hasta ahora, ya que hoy toca analizar algo parecido a una tablet pero de un tamaño bastante considerable. Hablamos de la Samsung Galaxy View, un dispositivo de 18 pulgadas concebido plenamente para consumir contenido multimedia. ¿Tablet? o portátil?
Características y especificaciones técnicas
Lo primero es que estamos ante un dispositivo muy grande. Pero cuando decimos muy grande, es muy grande. 45,1 cm x 27.5 cm x 11,9 mm y un peso de 2,65 kilogramos. Todo se comprende cuando os decimos que la Samsung Galaxy View tiene una pantalla de 18 pulgadas y está fabricada en plástico.
Siguiendo con el apartado de su diseño, que sin duda es lo más peculiar, nos damos cuenta que en su parte trasera se encuentra un soporte llamado kickstand que nos permitirá poder colocar el dispositivo en diferentes posturas según el uso que le queramos dar. También tiene un asa para agarrarla y poder transportarla con comodidad –si os miran por la calle, es algo normal–.
En su interior nos encontramos con un procesador Exynos 7580 acompañado de una Mali T720, 2 GB de RAM y 32/64 GB de almacenamiento ampliables mediante microSD. No es hardware tope de gama, pero para el uso que está destinada la Galaxy View es más que suficiente, ya que con las pruebas de rendimiento que hemos hechos, tanto la mayoría de juegos como las aplicaciones más pesadas han funcionado sin problemas.
Su punto más crítico es la capacidad de la batería. 5.700 mAh son insuficientes para este tamaño de pantalla por lo que tendremos que tener el dispositivo siempre conectado a una toma de luz, como si de un televisor o un ordenador se tratase.
Contamos con la versión Android 5.1 Lollipop y la famosa capa de personalización TouchWiz, y como no podía ser de otra manera, nos encontraremos con aplicaciones propias de Samsung y otras ya preinstaladas, ya sea tanto de ocio, multimedia o de productividad. Pueden parecernos útiles o no, pero ahí estarán queramos o no.
Centrándonos en el apartado multimedia, que es posiblemente lo más importante de este curioso dispositivo, nos encontramos como ya hemos dicho anteriormente, con una pantalla de 18 pulgadas TFT con resolución 1080 x 1920 que nos da como resultado unos 120 ppi. Hay que entenderlo, no usaremos la Galaxy View a pocos centímetros, si no como si fuese una televisión o un ordenador, por lo que se entiende esta resolución algo más baja de lo que estamos acostumbrados.
El audio suena alto pero es regulero, y el apartado fotográfico podéis imaginar que no es su punto fuerte. Una cámara delantera de 2.1 megapíxeles para uso esporádico. No existe cámara trasera.

Podemos encontrar la Samsung Galaxy View a un precio de 650 euros.
Un dispositivo diferente y que está destinado única y exclusivamente a consumir contenido multimedia. Ver películas, series, vídeos de YouTube e incluso jugar a videojuegos con mando. Esto será lo que más hagáis con la Galaxy View. Un dispositivo muy peculiar que sinceramente nos ha sorprendido, tiene sus puntos negativos como todo dispositivo, pero si lo que buscáis es un gadget con pantalla enorme, no sigáis buscando, la Samsung Galaxy View es lo que necesitáis.
Puntos positivos
Concepto : Es algo que no habíamos visto antes. Innovador a la par que curioso.
Kickstand : El soporte que nos permitirá colocar el dispositivo de varias maneras, además de transportarlo.
Puntos negativos
Batería : Su escasa batería hará que tengamos que tener conectada la Samsung Galaxy View siempre a una toma de luz.
Audio : El audio suena fuerte pero sin mucha calidad.

Hace unos días llegaba a nuestros oídos que, finalmente, la integración de Cortana, el asistente personal de Microsoft, en Cyanogen era oficial. El hecho de que Microsoft y Cyanogen llevaban un tiempo trabajando juntos era un secreto que no se había guardado con mucho cuidado. Concretamente, ambas firmas colaboraban para traer de manera nativa el asistente virtual de los de Redmond hasta el ecosistema Android.
La estrategia de Microsoft es conseguir que Cortana sea un asistente virtual diseminado a través de todas las plataformas posibles, con el fin de sustituir a los ya existentes. No obstante, por el momento parece que Google Now sigue estando presente en la versión que ha sido implementada Cortana, pero, ¿por cuánto tiempo?
¿Supone esto un peligro para la supervivencia de Android?
Para proporcionar una respuesta a ese interrogante, es necesario formular otra pregunta: ¿es capaz Cyanogen de desarrollar un ecosistema que mejore lo que ya ofrece Android?Sería muy difícil, cercano a lo imposible. Lisa y llanamente, para que Cyanogen robase su trono al ecosistema rey tendrían que juntarse todos los astros y hacer que los desarrolladores de una de las ROMs más adoptadas concibiesen algo rompedor.
También, para responder a esta complicada respuesta, es necesario analizar varios casos posibles. El primero de ellos es el más obvio: ¿y si Cortana simplemente no convence a los usuarios? Puede que la era de los asistentes personales todavía no haya llegado debido a que no han alcanzado un nivel de perfección que convenza al consumidor medio. En este más que posible caso, el éxito de Cortana sería nulo ya que los usuarios ni siquiera harían uso de ella.
En otro posible suceso, quizás Cortana triunfe sobre Google Now, debido a ciertas características que le proporcionen la ventaja sobre el competidor. De cualquier modo, aunque cabe la posibilidad de que el asistente personal de Microsoft aventaje en ciertos campos al de Google, Cyanogen tendría que extenderse mucho más de lo que actualmente se encuentra, cosa que muchos fabricantes no verían con buenos ojos.
Para ser sinceros, Cyanogen tiene como cimentación Android, y aunque ofrece muchas funcionalidades extra útiles, no llega al nivel de innovación necesario como para ser algo fascinante. En su mayoría, al público le gusta Cyanogen por dos simples razones. La primera es que su dispositivo se haya quedado estancado en una versión antigua de Android, y tiene la posibilidad de disfrutar de las últimas funcionalidades si instala CyanogenMod.
La segunda razón es simple: las capas de personalización cargadas de basura inservible, que lo único que consiguen es acaparar lag, no les gustan a nadie. Por este motivo, siempre es preferible gozar de un Android puro o lo más parecido a stock posible. Cyanogen proporciona esta posibilidad, lo cual atrae a todo aquel hastiado de su capa de personalización.
Conclusión
De ninguna manera podrían Cyanogen y Microsoft acabar con el dominio de Android. En el peor de los casos, podrían boicotear de forma mínima la cuota de mercado de la presume actualmente Android, pero en ningún momento supondrían una serie amenaza a tomar en cuenta.
