Start-up PR Mistakes To Avoid in 2016

January is a time for New Year’s resolutions and so drawing on my experiences of a year spent networking, hearing pitches at events like the HoxTech Angels, Hipster Hackers & Hustlers speed-pitching (everyone should try this event!) and many others, as well as helping companies spread their gospel, I want to air my feelings about what start-up companies doing PR for the first time should urgently try to avoid doing. Plus a few things I believe they should be doing.

The Covalent Bonding Rules Giving Rise To The Softness And Strength Of Carbon Allotropes

Last month we heard about a brand new solid form of carbon, separate to the graphite and diamond forms that we already know so well. Called Q-Carbon because of the way that it is created (carbon is heated very quickly to high temperature by a laser pulse, before being quickly cooled, in a process known as quenching), this new material is stronger than diamond, but exactly how?

BlackBerry Priv officially coming to Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon

You’ve been able to pony up $699 for the BlackBerry Priv unlocked and direct from BlackBerry since November, but if you wanted to get the Priv with a carrier payment plan, your only choice has been AT&T. That’ll change soon.

BlackBerry confirmed today that the Priv will be sold by Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the US. T-Mobile will begin sales on January 26, but neither Sprint nor Verizon have announced their launch plans quite yet. There’s also no word on how much any of these three carriers plan to ask for BlackBerry’s Android-powered slider.

Things have been a bit rocky for BlackBerry lately, but the Priv could help improve the situation there if it sells well. Whether or not that’ll happen remains to be seen, but the Priv’s chances of success will be greatly increased once it’s available on all four US carriers because it means that the major of US consumers will be able to get the device on a contract or payment plan, which is how most folks buy their phones.

Now that BlackBerry Priv’s availability will soon be greatly expanded, we’ve got one more question for BlackBerry: Where’s Marshmallow?

Dark Data: Take A Page From Sherlock Holmes

Gartner defines dark data as “information assets organizations collect, process and store during regular business activities but generally fail to use for other purposes.” Similar in concept to “dark matter,” where invisible forces affect visible celestial objects, data collected by companies goes unnoticed, unused and generally forgotten. However, businesses are missing significant business value by letting dark data go by without pause and careful attention. In fact, by capturing and using dark data to their benefit, companies can better meet customer needs and, as a result, get a leg up on the competition.
