Facebook planning for a future without Google’s approval

The Facebook app on Android exists only because Google allows it. It is distributed through the Play Store and uses Google services for everything from in-app payments to push notifications. If Google wanted to, it could block the app from the Play Store, which would limit the app’s reach catastrophically.

It isn’t like Google and Facebook are strangers to conflicts; Google has had problems with the Facebook app before. Remember when Facebook set the app to update using files outside of the Play Store? That didn’t go well with Google. Though Facebook brings Google business, it’s also competition and it’s not too far-fetched to think that Facebook could anger Google enough to get its removed app from the Play Store.

Naturally, Facebook has plans in place for such a situation. Though the company doesn’t expect it to happen anytime soon, it’s important to plan should things go wrong. Facebook would then be tasked with getting users to download the app outside of the biggest app store on Android, which won’t be easy (though it seems people are willing to do so to get their Facebook fix).

Another hurdle is replacing important Google services, like payments and notifications. These services can be recreated by Facebook, but the issue would be cost. Facebook could let other companies use these services in countries where Google services are either not available or not popular. Another option is to work with carriers on pre-installing the app on devices, which carriers already do through the Play Store.

While it seems a bit crazy to be planning for such an occurrence, it makes sense for a company that can stand to lose a lot by losing the grace of Google. Hopefully Facebook won’t do anything silly enough to do that.

Fiat Chrysler announces Android Auto support in 2016

It took a while, but Android Auto is finally spreading. A few car manufacturers have already adopted it, including Ford, more and more people are gaining access to the feature. And now, Fiat Chrysler has announced that many cars with Uconnect will be getting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in 2016.

Fiat Chrysler owns Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and more, so many brands of car will soon be getting Android Auto. Though not all brands and models will be getting it in 2016, Android Auto was shown off in the 2016 Dodge Charger Pursuit using a 1024×768 display.

Android Auto is slowly reaching more and more new cars (and if you own an old car, Android Auto head units are available for purchase). Having Google Maps on your car’s display sounds like the ideal system.

Lenovo Expands X1 Brand Across Product Line At CES 2016

Lenovo is a company that has generally been synonymous with quality and innovation while ensuring that their products also deliver new utility and battery life. This is the company who popularized 2in1s with the Yoga line, put a tablet battery into the hinge, and recently added pico projectors to tablet models- they aren’t afraid to take a few risks. This ideology was most perfectly exemplified in their X1 Carbon line of ThinkPad notebooks. At CES 2016 I’m attending in Las Vegas, Lenovo built on the success of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and its brand by introducing a whole plethora of new products, many of which carry the X1 designation, giving them a strong tie to the principals behind the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and what it means for those products that are considered “X1”.

FAA Sued In Federal Court Over Drone Registration Rules

In a move that may give hope to many model aircraft flyers, the validity of the FAA’s new drone registry is under challenge in federal court. The hope for these hobby flyers is that if the challenge is successful, they – including children as young as 13 – won’t have to file their names and home addresses  in a public database. Many hobby flyers have held off on registering their drones, concerned about the public availability of their information.

LG K7

LG K7

LG K7
Dimensiones LTE: 143.6 x 72.5 x 8.9mm
3G: 143.6 x 72.5 x 9.05mm
Pantalla 5 pulgadas, resolución FWGA(854×480 píxeles)
Procesador LTE: 1.1 GHz Quad-Core
3G: 1.3 GHz Quad-Core
RAM 1.5 GB / 1 GB
Sistema operativo Android 5.1.1
Almacenamiento 16 GB / 8 GB

LG K10

LG Serie K

LG K10
Dimensiones 146.6 x 74.8 x 8.8mm
Pantalla 5,3 pulgadas, resolución HD(1280 x 720)
Procesador LTE: 1.2 GHz or 1.3 GHz Quad-Core / 1.14 GHz Octa-Core
3G: 1.3 GHz Quad-Core
RAM 2 GB / 1.5 GB / 1 GB
Sistema operativo Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
Almacenamiento 16 GB / 8 GB

Asus Zenfone Zoom lands in the US in early February for $399

Asus first announced the Zenfone Zoom at last year’s CES, and then 11 months passed without the device being on sale anywhere. The company finally released the phone in its home market of Taiwan in December, and now it’s almost ready to make it available in the US.

Asus has revealed that the Zenfone Zoom will be out in the US in early February. You’ll be able to purchase one unlocked for $399. That’s a decent price considering what you’re getting in terms of specs.

The Zenfone Zoom (ZX551ML) has a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, Intel’s Atom Z3590 chipset (with a 2.5 GHz quad-core CPU), 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, 4G LTE, a 5 MP front-facing camera, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The main attraction is clearly its rear camera, which has 13 MP resolution, f/2.7-f/4.8 aperture, dual-LED flash, laser autofocus, 3x optical zoom, and optical image stabilization.
