Google Play Music family plan coming for just $14.99 a month
Google Play Music is a fantastic streaming service, but it notably lacked a plan that made pricing more acceptable for families like some of its top competitors.
While the exact timing wasn’t announced, later this year that problem will be solved with the new Google Play Music family plan. For just $14.99 a month up to 6 users will be able to access Google Play Music.
While the subscription is handled through a single account the experience remains the same for each individual user. This means that everyone still gets their own personalized experience rather than everyone’s favorites doing battle with one another.
I’m glad to see Google moving quickly to cover this deficiency in their plans.

Nexus Protect is Apple Care for your Nexus devices, but better
As smartphone manufacturers must try harder and harder to differentiate their products from competitors, after purchase care has become more important than ever. Google is stepping it up a notch today with its Nexus devices and the unveiling of Nexus Protect.
Nexus Protect is essentially Apple Care for Nexus devices. But better. Starting at $69 for the Nexus 5X, and $89 for the Nexus 6P, Nexus Protect will cover your handset from mechanical breakdown and accidental damage for two years. There was no mention of deposits, and Nexus Protect is a 24 hour service. If you call on a Tuesday night, there is a chance you will have your phone by as soon as Wednesday or Thursday afternoon.
As far as warranty plans go, Nexus Protect is the best we’ve ever seen. We’ll update with more details on Nexus Protect once it becomes available.

The Nexus 6P and 5X will both work on Project Fi
The Nexus 6 won’t be the only phone that works on Google’s carrier service, Project Fi, anymore. The brand new Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X will both also work with Project Fi.
Project Fi relies on existing carrier networks, like Sprint and T-Mobile, combined with WiFi for extended coverage across the US. Google only charges for the data you use with Project Fi, keeping your monthly bill down as low as possible. With the introduction of the Nexus 6P and 5X, that makes the total number of devices that work on Project Fi three. Which while still not the best, is a lot better than it was yesterday.

Updated Google Chromecast and Chromecast Audio unveiled
Google’s Chromecast was the best-selling item on Amazon at one point and now there’s a new one. There’s also Chromecast Audio with multi-room support. The Chromecast app has been redesigned too.
Google Chromecast
With a £30 the Chromecast can smart up any TV – it supports video streaming and screen mirroring. There’s already a great roster of apps, but now Spotify, BBC iPlayer Radio and Chrome Photos are joining the party.
The Chromecast comes with a new design, new colors too (Black, Lemonade and Coral), and the much requested Wi-Fi ac at 5GHz (great for apartments with congested Wi-Fi traffic).
Unfortunately, the resolution is still capped at 1080p – there’s no 4K UHD video support. This is quite disappointing since 4K streaming services are picking up speed and, of course, the new Nexus phones (among many others) can shoot 4K video.
As before, you can use Android (4.1+), iOS (7.0+), Windows (7+) or Mac OS X (10.7+) to connect to your Chromecast.
Google Chromecast Audio
If you’re lusting after a multi-room speaker setup but a Sonos is out of your price range, you can grab a £30 Chromecast Audio. You can use a Cast-enabled app on your phone (Android or iOS, tablets and desktops work too) to search, play and queue songs.
The gadget has an optical out, RCA and 3.5mm AUX connectors to hook up just about any speaker. If you use multiple Chromecast Audios around your house they will sync playback between them so you can move between rooms and keep listening. Well, you would be able to do that later this year (an update is coming).
Spotify, Google Play Music, Deezer, BBC iPlayer Radio and others are available natively for music streaming. Another option is to mirror the audio from your Android device your laptop’s Chrome browser to a Chromecast so you can use pretty much any music service you like. You can use your local collection too, of course.
Either way, the streaming is done over Wi-Fi so no quality is lost (rather than the lossy Bluetooth). And friends and family can easily share music from their devices too without any setup required….

Android 6.0 Marshmallow coming to Nexus phones and tablets next week
Google announced the official rollout of Android 6.0 Marshmallow – there aren’t any new features but soon a lot more people will get it (so far it was only available as a developer preview).
Starting next week, the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 phones plus the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 tablets will start receiving the new Android version.
As a reminder of the new features, Google really stepped up the new voice assistant game. Google Now on Tap is a full-blown digital assistant and can answer questions and understand natural language questions. Third-party app developers can tap into that too.
Further, there are granular permissions, native support for fingerprint readers to help with Android Pay and Play Store payments, Doze (which improves standby battery life on the Nexus 6 by 30%). Notifications are less intrusive since you can swipe them up to hide them without dismissing…
