Android 6.0 Marshmallow coming to Nexus phones and tablets next week

Google announced the official rollout of Android 6.0 Marshmallow – there aren’t any new features but soon a lot more people will get it (so far it was only available as a developer preview).

Starting next week, the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 phones plus the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 tablets will start receiving the new Android version.

As a reminder of the new features, Google really stepped up the new voice assistant game. Google Now on Tap is a full-blown digital assistant and can answer questions and understand natural language questions. Third-party app developers can tap into that too.

Further, there are granular permissions, native support for fingerprint readers to help with Android Pay and Play Store payments, Doze (which improves standby battery life on the Nexus 6 by 30%). Notifications are less intrusive since you can swipe them up to hide them without dismissing…

Google Play Music All Access Family Plan becomes official for $14.99 per month

Just as rumored yesterday, the Google Play Music All Access streaming service is getting a family plan soon. And the details in that leak have panned out too, including the fact that the pricing and user limits are exactly the same as the ones for Apple Music, surprisingly or not.

For $14.99 per month, up to 6 family members will all be able to use Play Music All Access, each with his or her own account. Each person will have access on any device he or she owns. Tailored recommendations will be individualized for each account, so as not to confuse people with the music that other family members like.

Google is apparently still working on this feature, so it won’t be available immediately. Instead, look for it to be out before the end of the…

LG Nexus 5X, an evolution of the most popular Nexus ever

Joining the Nexus 6p is the similarly well leaked Nexus 5X. While we had already seen basically all the specs on the 5X, it was still interesting to see how Google positioned it in comparison to the clear cut flagship Nexus 6P. They were quick to point out that the Nexus 5 was the most popular Nexus in the history of the program and that the Nexus 5x is essentially an evolution of that product.

Right out of the gate they also noted that it incorporated many of the same high-end features that are found in the Nexus 6P, such as the fingerprint unlocking for Android Pay, the same large pixel 12.3 MP camera and USB Type-C port with fast charging.

As leaked the screen on the Nexus 5X is a 1080p AMOLED, a step down from the Nexus 6P, but probably an acceptable one on a 5.2-inch screen.

The processor is a Snapdragon 808 with Adreno 418 GPU. Storage is either 16 or 32GB and unfortunately as rumored the RAM is just 2GB. We’ll have to wait to have them in hand to see if Marshmallow makes that palatable.

The Nexus 5X has always listening built-in to take advantage of the awesome new Now on Tap features in Marshmallow.

The Nexus 5X will be available in the Google Store today with prices starting at $379 and will start shipping later in October. Google is throwing in some extras with the new Nexus devices including 90 days of Play Music, $50 in Google Play credit and an optional $69 Nexus Protect plan that will extend the normal 1-year warranty to 2 years and includes accidental damage protection.

The New Nexus Phones Have a Live Photos-Like Feature

The New Nexus Phones Have a Live Photos-Like Feature

Apple just got done showing off the new iPhone’s camera capabilities, including a new feature called Live Photos. Live Photos starts capturing a moment seconds before, and just after, you hit the shutter, giving you a short, animated image instead of just the still. A fun new capability, sure, but also a bit of a […]

Android now has 1.4 billion active devices

Google always shares a handful of interesting facts and data points about Android during its events, and today is no different. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, there are now 1.4 billion active Android devices.

To get this number, Google records Android phone use over a 30 day period. They did the same for Google Play, and announced that Google’s media market has 1 billion active users. These numbers have been attributed in large part to the rise of Android One, where the program has led to double the usage of Android in both India and Vietnam.

Google has been talking about capturing the next billion smartphone users for some time now, it looks like it’s well on its way.

El Nexus 5X ya está aquí: pantalla de 5,2″, Snapdragon 808 hexa-core y 16/32GB por 379/429$

Nexus 5X
