There are certain aspects of mecha anime that have become somewhat of a staple. The trick is to make these staples seem fresh and interesting. In that sense, the challenge then falls on the writer to concoct something new out of what has already passed. Knights of Sidonia is an excellent example of what happens when somebody gets it very right.
