Buy a new Galaxy and Samsung will make the payments until 2016

Last month, Samsung launched an Ultimate Test Drive promotion to tempt iPhone owners to go Galaxy. That offer left Android users out in the cold, but now Samsung has a new promo that we can take advantage of.

Samsung’s Phone Payments On Us promo will do exactly what its name implies, which is covering the phone payments on a new Galaxy device. More specifically, it’ll cover the payments on a new Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, or Galaxy Note 5 until 2016. The deal will pay up to $120 on your new device, regardless of whether you got it on an installment plan or a lease.

If you do happen to have an iPhone laying around or know an iPhone owner that wants to make the switch, they can take advantage of this deal, too. Not only will Samsung make the first few payments for an iPhone user that trades in their Apple device and buys a Galaxy, but they’ll also give ‘em a $100 Google Play credit to fill that new phone up with apps.

This deal runs from September 25 through October 9. It’s worth noting that AT&T devices are excluded from the offer, and if you do end up trading in an iPhone as part of this deal, you’ll need to buy a Galaxy phone on the same receipt. It’s also worth noting that the iPhone models that are eligible for this promo are the 4s, 5, 5s, 6, and 6 Plus.

Leaked presentation confirm Nexus 6P design, specs, and colors

We have seen some pretty detailed leaks regarding the two new Nexus devices in this week that showcased both the front and back design in some fancy press images.

Now, a leaked presentation has surfaced, which goes further and confirms the design and specs of the bigger 6P, along with the four colors it will be sold in. The presentation was designed for internal training purposes.

First the specs. The slides confirm the Nexus 6P will have a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 resolution display (no confirmation on display tech), metal body, Snapdragon 810 v2.1, 3450mAh battery, 178g weight, front stereo speakers, and USB Type-C connector. The slide also claims faster charging and transfer rates, so Qualcomm Quick Charge might be on board.

The other slides talk about the improved camera, fingerprint sensor on the back, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, which brings with it many features, including Doze that saves battery when the phone is not in use, and app permissions.

The Nexus 6P will be available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities in aluminum, graphite, frost, and gold color options, with the gold color being exclusive to Japan initially.

Other than that, we get a good look at the design, including the camera bump at the back, which seen from the side isn’t quite severe and only slightly raised. The smaller Nexus 5X also makes an appearance in one of the slides.

Mi móvil, ¿mi voto?

Este domingo hay elecciones en Catalunya. Más allá de siglas, ideologías y polémicas varias, hay una cosa clara: el despliegue informativo va a ser brutal. Los distintos medios de comunicación van a ofrecernos una buena muestra de animaciones, proyecciones e infografías que harán las delicias de los amantes de los datos. Sin embargo, pese a todo ese despliegue, la fiesta tecnológica no llegará a lo que es el proceso de votación. Seguiremos escogiendo a los políticos introduciendo un papelito (reciclado, eso sí), en una urna de metacrilato.

El voto electrónico es una tendencia en auge que, poco a poco, se va instaurando en diversas partes del mundo. Hasta siete países lo tienen implantado de forma efectiva. No obstante, los recelos que genera el sistema de votar a través de una pantalla todavía son altos. La seguridad es un elemento clave y, en ocasiones, como en la célebre elección a la presidencia de los EUA de 2012, la práctica ha demostrado que aún queda trabajo por hacer.

¿De la dictadura del móvil a la democracia participativa?

La pregunta que cabe hacerse es: ¿llegará el día en el que podamos votar desde nuestro smartphone? Las proclamas en favor de una democracia participativa son ya una constante en la vida pública. La creación de plataformas como change.org o el auge del crowfunding, son en parte una respuesta a la necesidad de cambiar las cosas y una muestra de la fuerza del asociacionismo favorecido por la tecnología. Pese a ello, la posibilidad de votar a través del teléfono todavía parece lejana.

Un paseo por Google Play nos da algunas soluciones imaginativas como redConvive, para votar desde tu dispositivo las cuestiones de la comunidad de vecinos, o VotAndo, para votar digitalmente e informarse sobre lo que pasa en el Parlamento español. Sin embargo, son aplicaciones a las que todavía les falta recorrido, aunque bien pudieran ser el inicio de algo más sólido.

Podemos, uno de los nuevos partidos españoles que habla de regeneración democrática, apostó por el voto electrónico en sus elecciones internas. La empresa Agora Voting fue la encargada de la creación de la plataforma de votación. Fue un proceso elogiado y admirado, aunque no exento de polémica. Hubo críticas, como la que lanzó Ricardo Galli en su blog, que deberían tenerse en cuenta.

Sea como fuera, parece que la voluntad nos encamina hacia el voto electrónico y desde cualquier tipo de dispositivo. Se diría que puede ser una buena solución para aumentar la participación ciudadana, pero es un tema suficientemente importante como para tomarse a la ligera. Todavía no tenemos una urna-de-metacrilato-killer-app.
