Malware attack: Apple removes infected apps from Chinese App Store

Just days after it was discovered that Apple’s Chinese App Store contains several malware-infected apps, the Cupertino-based company has cleaned up the app marketplace, and also issued a formal statement regarding the same.

“We’ve removed the apps from the App Store that we know have been created with this counterfeit software,” said a company spokesperson. “We are working with the developers to make sure they’re using the proper version of Xcode to rebuild their apps.”

There was, however, no word on how iPhone/iPad users can detect whether or not their devices are already infected with the malware, dubbed XcodeGhost.

According to Qihoo360 Technology, a Chinese security firm, a total of 344 apps have been found to infected so far. Some of these include music app NetEase Cloud Music, chat app WeChat, and ride-sharing app Didi…

Samsung reportedly prepping Galaxy phone leasing program

Phone lease programs are all the rage in the US market nowadays, with every major carrier offering its own version of the leasing program. Now it looks like Samsung may get in on the action, too.

Samsung is prepping a leasing program for its Galaxy phones in the US, says an “industry executive with knowledge of Samsung’s plans” speaking to Forbes. Details on the program are scarce, but the program will reportedly be similar to Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program, which offers unlocked versions of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus that can be used with any US carrier. After one year, the customer can trade in their iPhone for a new model.

Samsung’s Galaxy leasing program is allegedly set to launch sometime in the coming months, though it’s said that Samsung could push its debut up.

While there are already Samsung Galaxy phones and leasing programs available on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, Samsung’s own offering might be more attractive to some folks if it is indeed like Apple’s leasing program. For example, Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program offers unlocked phones and insurance. What will be interesting is seeing what the phones included with Samsung’s program look like. Some of Samsung’s Galaxy phones have carrier-branded hardware, preinstalled carrier apps, or both, so it’s unclear how that’ll be handled in a leasing program.

Two Scenarios As Taiwan Panics To Restart Major Economic Engine

Older people in the United States think of Taiwan as a place that makes toys for the world. Younger ones associate made-in-Taiwan with their electronic devices, including Apple products designed in Silicon Valley. Either way, the west Pacific island with factories along its much of its west coast has depended on exports for decades. But export orders were down from 5% or more each month from May to July compared to the same months of 2014, an unusual rout. Demand from No. 1 market China is waning with its economic growth. Made-in-China, even designed-in-China, has coincidentally taken over much of what Taiwan can ship to anywhere in the world. In the United States, the No. 2 Taiwan export market, consumers show signs of cooling their purchases of simple tech hardware.
