Sony rolls out Android 5.1.1 for the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, and Z Ultra

Sony is now rolling out the update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for three of its smartphones – the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Xperia Z Ultra. This follows a similar rollout which made its way to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, and Xperia Tablet Z last week.

The devices getting it this time around are basically successors of sorts to that particular series. They’re also quite old, which makes the fact that Sony is still supporting them even now an interesting fact.

For all three handsets, after applying the update you will be on build number 14.6.A.0.368. Currently the new software is live in only a few regions, but it’s expected to spread across the world in the coming days and weeks.

The update fixes the famous Stagefright vulnerability, adds additional options for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the notification menu, has new themes and Settings icons, integrates LinkedIn with your Calendar and Contacts, and improves camera focus, speed, and accuracy.

El Meizu Pro 5 supera al Galaxy Note 5 en Geekbench

Meizu es una de los grandes fabricantes chinos que mejor lo está haciendo en los últimos años. La compañía con sede en china lanzará muy pronto el que será su próximo terminal buque insignia, el Meizu Pro 5. Este dispositivo se presentará en un evento que la empresa ha programado para el próximo 23 de Septiembre en Pekín.

Este dispositivo será un terminal de gama alta, el cuál tendrá una pantalla de 5’5 pulgadas bajo una resolución de alta definición, 1920 x 1080 píxeles. A pocos días de su presentación oficial, el dispositivo ha pasado por algunas pruebas de rendimiento donde, muestran que será uno de los terminales más potentes que habrá en el mercado.

Este terminal ha obtenido una puntuación muy positiva en la prueba de rendimiento de la famosa aplicación Geekbench. El Meizu Pro 5 obtiene una puntuación mejor que la del nuevo terminal de Samsung, el Galaxy Note 5. Es curioso que el dispositivo obtiene mejor puntuación cuando ambos terminales se equipan bajo el mismo SoC, un procesador Samsung Exynos 7420 de ocho núcleos y 14 nm.

El dispositivo cuenta con unas especificaciones de lo mejoricito que hay en el mercado, pero hay un apartado en el que es inferior al respecto del terminal de Samsung y es, su pantalla. El Meizu Pro 5 o también conocido como Meizu NIUX, incorpora una pantalla FullHD de 5,5 pulgadas y el Note 5 una pantalla de 5,7 pulgadas. Esta quizás, es una de las razones por las que el dispositivo obtiene mejor puntuación que el dispositivo coreano.

Hablando de especificaciones, vemos como el Meizu podría tener dos variantes dependiendo su memoria de RAM que sería de 3 GB o de 4 GB. Su almacenamiento interno será de 32 GB, tendrá una cámara principal y situada en la parte trasera del dispositivo de 21 Megapíxeles, mientras que la cámara delantera será de 5 MP. Por último comentar que, correrá bajo Android 5.1 Lollipop bajo la capa de personalización de Flyme. Ya tan sólo nos queda esperar al próximo 23 de Septiembre para descubrir más sobre este dispositivo.

Russia finds Google guilty in alleged anti-competitive practices

Russia isn’t exactly known as the beacon of fairness. So when Russia’s anti-monopoly agency found Google was guilty of abusing its market position after a complaint by Russian search engine Yandex, I couldn’t help but cringe.

Google was found guilty of competing with Yandex by pre-installing Google apps on Android devices. And why shouldn’t it? It’s Google’s OS, it’s only fair that Google installs its apps on the devices. Not only is that absolutely fair, it also helps the user, as those apps fit into the Google ecosystem Android is built on. Alternative apps are freely available on Google’s own Play Store and are not blocked or hard to get to.

Yandex is actually more popular than Google in Russia, but competition has gotten strong. With the popularity of Android rising, it seems Yandex is worried about its position. No better time to complain to the government, right?

This kind of stuff isn’t exclusive to Russia, of course: it happens everywhere. Microsoft was once sued for including Internet Explorer with Windows in multiple areas, being called anti-competitive for not including competing browsers with its own operating systems.

Huawei Nexus gets benchmarked with Snapdragon 810, 3GB of RAM

We’re now just over two weeks away from Google’s rumored September 29 event during which the two new Nexus phones are supposed to become official. As such, leaks about both the LG Nexus 5X and the Huawei Nexus are starting to show up left and right.

Today the Huawei Nexus has been spotted in a benchmark’s database. The fact that someone has put a prototype through the paces of Geekbench thankfully reveals a few key specs.

The Huawei Nexus sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, as do a lot of other high-end handsets this year. Google’s next phablet is graced with 3GB of RAM, and it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow as you’d expect. The new version of the mobile OS is going to debut alongside the two new Nexus smartphones.

Other specs haven’t surfaced this time around, but past rumors talked about the Huawei Nexus having either a 5.5″ or a 5.7″ screen, with either 1080p or QHD resolution. It should also get a USB Type-C port, and a fingerprint scanner.

Cyanogen working on integrating Cortana with Microsoft’s help

Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortana is awesome and all, but a lot of her potential is wasted due to lack of integration with Android. There’s only so much a standalone app can do compared to Google Now on Android or Siri on iOS.

In a strange partnership, Cyanogen and Microsoft are working together to integrate Cortana into Cyanogen OS. This will give the virtual assistant plenty of power and resources to do everything she’s designed to do, just like on Windows Phone. Though most people won’t get to experience this, the custom ROM community and maybe the few phones that can officially run Cyanogen OS will reap the benefits.

Most people really wouldn’t expect Microsoft to work with a company like Cyanogen, but it seems it’s serious about the spread of Cortana. With Windows 10 being a free upgrade to every Windows 7 and 8 computer, Cortana might just become a big thing.
