Qualcomm outs new Snapdragon chips and Quick Charge 3.0, talks up Snapdragon 820′s X12 LTE modem

Qualcomm has dropped a Snapdragon bomb that includes two new processors, an updated version of Quick Charge, and a new feature for the Snapdragon 820.

First up, the Snapdragon 430 and Snapdragon 617 both offer octa-core configurations with Cortex-A53s clocked at up to 1.5GHz and 1.2GHz, respectively. The 430’s also got an Adreno 505 GPU, while the 617 has an Adreno 405. The Snapdragon 617 offers slightly higher top-end LTE speeds of up to 300Mbps, while the 430 tops out at 150Mbps, but they both include support for photos up to 21 megapixels as well as Quick Charge 3.0.

The Snapdragon 617 will begin appearing in mobile devices before the end of 2015, while the Snapdragon 430 is slated to show up in the second half of 2016.

Quick Charge 3.0 is the newest version of Qualcomm’s fast charging technology. It’s twice as fast as Quick Charge 1.0 and can charge a phone from 0 to 80 percent in just 35 minutes. It’s also 38 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 2.0. Quick Charge 3.0 is forward and backward compatible with other Quick Charge versions and can be used with several connectors, including microUSB and USB-Type C.

Quick Charge 3.0 will be available with the Snapdragon 820, 620, 618, 617, and 430.

Rounding out today’s announcements is the Snapdragon 820’s X12 LTE modem. The feature will enable LTE Cat 12 download speeds of up to 600Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps. The X12 LTE modem also enables lots of other networking features like 4×4 MIMO on a single LTE carrier, LTE-U, and LWA, all of which ought to help boost a Snapdragon 820’s networking capabilities. The X12 LTE modem also includes VoLTE, ViLTE, and support for the Zeroth computing platform, which will keep an eye on Wi-Fi connectivity and smartly decide when to switch calls from LTE to Wi-Fi and back again.

The Snapdragon 820 is slated to begin appearing in devices in the first half of 2016.

When asked to comment, a Google spokesperson said, “We haven’t yet received the ruling,” adding that “when we do, we will study it and determine our next…
