Facebook’s New Spam-Killer Hints At The Future Of Coding

Facebook’s New Spam-Killer Hints At The Future Of Coding
Facebook has spent the last two years rebuilding the system that removes spam — malicious, offensive, or otherwise unwanted messages — from the world’s largest social network. That’s no small task — Facebook juggles messages from more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. To tackle the problem, the team made an unusual choice: they used a programming language called Haskell.

Inside The Inscrutable Physics Of A Heart Murmur

Inside The Inscrutable Physics Of A Heart Murmur
Coming up with a complete mathematical description of turbulence, in which a fluid can be described at every point using what are known as the Navier-Stokes equations, is one of seven Millennium Prize problems put forth by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Showing that solutions to these equations _always_ exist (or don’t) then comes with a million dollar bounty.

2nd gen Moto 360 to come September 8, says  Lenovo on Weibo

The upcoming Motorola smartwatch has leaked though several accidental posts but now parent company Lenovo has revealed the official announcement date – “it’s time” says the teaser image and sets the date at September 8.

It even gives us a peek at the watch itself with its 2-o’clock button, though we’ve seen the watch plenty of times already. The latest buzz is that there will be two versions of the Moto 360 (2nd gen) – regular and Sport. One of them will keep the 46.5mm size, the other will be a bit smaller.

Moto 360 (2nd gen) will be unveiled on September 8 (click for full size)

This info corroborates nicely with the September 8 launch date that Swedish stores let slip, which gives credence to the price too – $460/€400 for the 46.5mm model and $350/€305 for the smaller model.

This also means the Moto 360 (2nd gen) will not be among the many smartwatches at IFA, which starts this week. Competition will heat up quick, but at least it will have the spotlight all to itself.

Do You Know Where Your Software-Defined Everything Is?

Life inside the datacenter is increasingly dynamic. Now a microcosm of data life in its own right, the rise of software-defined everything (increasingly written as SDX) means we start using terms like ‘server-side’ more often. These are the mechanical workings of the cloud, these are the back-end services that drive your tablet and these are the back-office technologies that even the CEO has to take notice of, hopefully.
Adoption of software-defined datacenter architecture means ‘traditional’ network hardware appliances give way to software-based intelligence that ‘describes’ virtual machines (and their form and function) in terms of what they do to our data. Cloud security automation firm HyTrust says that as organizations have increasingly virtualized their infrastructure, server-to-server traffic has grown to represent as much as 80% of overall datacenter traffic.

‘Catering To The Pirates’ As Start-up Business Model

“The stock industry is about $6 billion dollars if you count photos, videos, and everything. That’s obviously not a small number, but if you think of the usage of visual content and how little payment there is, this industry should be a $500 billion industry,” said Christian Toksvig, CEO of start-up StockUnlimited. And says Toksvig, “It’s that gap that I’m interested in and to do that I have to cater to the pirates” of images and graphics.

Secret Service agent pleads guilty to stealing money from Silk Road dealers

Secret Service agent pleads guilty to stealing money from Silk Road dealers
Shaun Bridges, a former Secret Service agent who was investigating the Silk Road website, pled guilty today to charges of money laundering and obstruction of justice. After Silk Road admin Curtis Green was arrested, he debriefed agents in Baltimore. Bridges took his admin credentials and started locking Silk Road drug dealers out of their accounts. He then looted them, grabbing about 20,000 Bitcoins.
