LG unveils the G Pad II 10.1 with Android 5.1.1, Snapdragon 800

On August 14, LG let loose the G Pad II 8.0 on its Korean website, and now it looks like the larger sibling of the tablets is getting its time in the limelight, too.

LG has officially introduced the G Pad II 10.1, which features a 10.1-inch display with a 19280×1080 resolution. The screen has a nifty trick, too, that will dim the blue lighting of the screen’s brightness in an effort to make reading whatever’s on the screen easier. There’s also the seemingly now-standard features, including Dual Window, which lets users run two apps side-by-side. There’s also QuickMemo+, which will allow owners to create and save a note from anywhere.

Under the hood, there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.26GHz. There’s 2GB of RAM, with 16GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot, and a five-megapixel camera on the back with a 2MP front-facing shooter on the other side. The battery is measured in at 7400mAh, and the G Pad II 10.1 is running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop under LG’s proprietary user interface.

Unfortunately, this larger tablet doesn’t appear to have a full-size USB port like the G Pad II 8.0 does, which is interesting.

LG says that there will be both Wi-Fi and LTE models sold in “key markets” in North America, Europe, and Asia. When that will be, though, and how much the G Pad II 10.1 will cost still remains a mystery. The company plans on showing off the tablet at IFA in September, though, so if you’re interested in seeing more, stay tuned for that.

Microsoft Lumia 940 and 940XL rumoured to launch on October 19

While there have already been reports that Microsoft’s upcoming flagships, dubbed Lumia 940 and Lumia 940XL, will be unveiled in the month of October, looks like now we have a possible launch date for the devices.

According to a report from NPU, the handsets will be unveiled on October 19 in New York. Not only this, the report also says that the Surface Pro 4 tablet as well as a new Microsoft Band could also be introduced at the same event alongside the flagships, something which is in-line with what we’ve already heard before.

For those who aren’t already aware, the flagship devices were earlier said to be named Lumia 950 and 950XL, but recent reports have suggested that they’ll be dubbed Lumia 940 and 940XL instead. Needless to say, none of this has been officially confirmed by the company, so take it with a pinch of salt.

This comes just a few weeks after an image (see above) showing a prototype of either of the two flagships surfaced…

‘Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain’s’ First Reviews Are Incredibly Good

The fall release season is almost upon us, and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is the game that’s going to kick things off. The open-world installment in the legendary Metal Gear series may have suffered from some personality conflicts towards the end of its production — gamers will notice that the name “Hideo Kojima” appears nowhere on the packaging — but early reviews are indicating that this didn’t have much of an effect on production. If this is to be Hideo Kojima’s last Metal Gear Solid game, people seem to agree, he’s finishing with style. Reviews are setting a high bar for what’s sure to be a crowded fall: the game currently sits at a 95 on Metacritic — that’s the sort of score you don’t get without a few 10’s. Expect more soon when I’ve spent enough time with the game, but until then, here’s what others are saying:

IGN — 10/10: The Phantom Pain is the kind of game I thought would never exist – one where every minute gameplay detail has true purpose. Its lack of story focus is sure to be divisive for the Metal Gear faithful, but the resulting emphasis on my story, my tales of Espionage Action, easily make it my favorite in the series. There have certainly been sandbox action games that have given me a bigger world to roam, or more little icons to chase on my minimap, but none have pushed me to plan, adapt, and improvise the way this one does. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain doesn’t just respect my intelligence as a player, it expects it of me, putting it in league that few others occupy.

Samsung Galaxy Note5 battery life test

Samsung surely raised a few eyebrows by equipping the Galaxy Note5 with a smaller battery than its predecessor. The newcomer’s 3,000mAh unit is also non-removable, so we were quite curious to put it through the rigors of our battery test.

The Note5 started off its run through our battery test track by recording twenty eight and a half hours of talk time before its battery called it quits. That’s the exact same score as Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and a result worthy for a flagship.

Listing reveals Huawei Mate S to come with Force Touch

The Mate S, Huawei’s upcoming smartphone which is expected to be unveiled at this year’s IFA event in Berlin next month, could come with Force Touch technology. This was revealed in a listing that recently appeared on OppoMart.

If you aren’t already aware, the Force Touch technology allows the device to distinguish between a light and a strong touch, enabling it to react differently in each case. Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6S smartphone is already rumoured to come with this kind of display.

Other specs revealed by the listing include home-grown Kirin 935 SoC, 5.7-inch (1080 x 1920 resolution) display, 3GB RAM, and 64GB of expandable internal memory. In terms of camera, the handset features 20MP rear unit and an 8MP front shooter.

It packs in a 4100mAh battery, and runs Android Lollipop version 5.1 with Emotion 3.1 UI running on top. There’s also a fingerprint scanner on board. The listing also reveals a price tag of $599.
