The Xbox One Needs Backwards Compatibility For Controllers, Too
When Microsoft announced backwards compatibility at E3, it hit the audience like a bombshell. Here was a feature we assumed was all but lost to the Xbox One/PS4 generation, suddenly roaring back in classic E3 surprise style. It continued the remarkable turnaround story of the Xbox One under Phil Spencer: a pro-player move, something that expanded the capability of the Xbox One, and something that gave gamers more options. It was a far cry, certainly, from the Xbox under Mattrick, a division that seemed more interested in restrictions than features. Since then, backwards compatibility has proven itself eminently capable of delivering emulated Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One: most people can only still play under Microsoft’s preview program, but the public at large gets a hint of the new feature throughout the Rare Replay Collection. But there’s something off about playing these games on the Xbox One, even if it has nothing to do with what’s on the screen. If we’re really going to be playing Xbox 360 games going forward, I want to do it with an Xbox 360 controller.

Sony Wants Players To Help Test Next Big PS4 Update
Sony has called for an open beta to test it’s next big update for the PS4, according to a post on the PS Blog. The PS4 has seen several updates since launching two years ago, and the next big one is reportedly coming in the next few months, depending on how well this beta goes. There’s an application process over on the PS blog, so even though it’s a public beta, there are no guaranteed spots. You can apply for the process right here.

Game Time for Fixing The Gas Industry’s Achilles Heel
By Ben Ratner and Sean Wright
As the dog days of summer expire and football season approaches, many sports fans will anxiously scan their favorite team’s rosters for training camp injuries–finding everything from the innocuous, to the dreaded torn Achilles that already sidelined several pro players for the season’s start.
When it comes to the energy industry, methane emissions loom as the Achilles heel of natural gas. On the surface, natural gas appears to many as a star American player – abundant and cleaner burning than coal.
But unchecked methane emissions, which are 84 times more potent than CO2, undercut natural gas’ climate change performance.
This risk has grown particularly acute because the recently finalized Clean Power Plan, which targets carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants, casts natural gas as part of a viable near-term strategy to win the climate game.
The spotlight on natural gas’ performance is only growing as more viewers tune in.
The difference is, while there is no sure-fire way to prevent an Achilles tear on the athletic field, we have the means at our fingertips to dramatically reduce methane emissions and help natural gas become a stronger player that puts more points on the board for the economy and climate.
New EPA methane rules announced Tuesday can be an important step if finalized in strong form, yielding four business benefits:

Netflix Saves Users From Watching 130 Hours Of Commercials Per Year
While the cable industry has not completely withered and died with the advent of streaming services like Netflix just yet, it has fundamentally changed the way many users watch TV. Namely, they watch without ads. Streaming-focused site Extreamist did some relatively simple math to show just how many commercials Netflix cuts out of its shows, and what that adds up to over the course of a full year’s subscription.

TV Channel Guide from the Future
TV Channel Guide from the Future
A whole lotta cash is flowing from old television networks to new internet properties.
And what will these web properties do with it all? Probably spend it on getting more Facebook Likes. But also, many of them will be creating their own cable channels. This seems inevitable, because that’s where real money is minted today.

Microsoft adds ‘snapshots’ to Bing Search app with Google Now On Tap features
Google Now On Tap was one of the more exciting announcements at this year’s Google I/O event, allowing Android users to access Google Now for immediate, contextually relevant information on anything they might be searching for or talking about on their Android-based device. Not to be outdone, though, Microsoft has updated one of its apps to bring similar features to Android devices — even before Google does.
Recently, Microsoft updated its Bing Search app for Android that offers what the company calls “snapshots.” With snapshots, users can press and hold their Home button with the Bing Search app installed, and a card will pop up over whatever app you might have been using. That card will show information based on what you were looking at, just like Google Now On Tap, and Microsoft indicates that information will be gathered from Wikipedia, Airbnb, Yelp and probably other sources.
Bing snapshots can even show more information about the weather, too.
If you want to try out Bing Search and the new snapshots feature, you’ll need to be running Android 4.4 or higher and have the latest version of the app on your device. For those that have been waiting to try out Google Now On Tap, this might be a nice alternative until that launches with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Unless you’re completely against using Bing, of course.
