Huawei Mate 7S might have been benchmarked, revealing specs

As we approach the September 2 unveiling date for Huawei’s next phablet, we’re starting to see more and more leaks and rumors about it. This device will clearly have “S” in its name, as per Huawei’s teasers, but it’s still up for debate whether it will be called Mate 7S or just Mate S.

Regardless of all that, the new Mate has seemingly been put through the paces of the AnTuTu benchmark recently. This has thankfully revealed a pretty complete list of its specs, through the benchmark’s information screen (which you can see in the image to the left).

So, the next Huawei Mate is apparently going to come with a 5.7-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 20 MP rear camera, an 8 MP front-facing snapper, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of built-in storage. At the helm we see Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 935 chipset, featuring an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.1 GHz and the Mali-T628MP4 GPU. At the time it was tested, the smartphone ran Android 5.0 Lollipop.

These specs mostly fit with what we’ve been hearing so far, but there are a few surprises. The main camera has been rumored to be a 13 MP unit some times, and the display resolution most talked about was QHD.

As for how the phone actually did in the AnTuTu benchmark, the overall score it achieved was 46,776, which isn’t bad but isn’t record-breaking either. However, in the GPU compartment things aren’t looking good at all, with the 3D performance score being just 11,946.

Bigger Not Always Better, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ And Note 5 Underscore Display Sweet Spot

When oversized smartphones started hitting the market, most folks scoffed a bit, especially since Apple’s dominant iPhone product offering managed to hold commanding market share for so long at 4 – 4.5 inches. The term “phablet” was coined to describe what most considered to be unweildly devices for power users, that crossed the tablet and smartphone display demarcation line. Since those early days, market preferences have trended definitively larger with even hold-out Apple caving on the iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung, on the other hand, has always been at the forefront of the large display smartphone trend and it has paid off for the company nicely over the years. The company began first with devices like the 4.5-inch Infuse 4G, then the 4.65 Galaxy Nexus and finally they went all-in with the original 5.3-inch Galaxy Note product offering, which grew with each new iteration to the 5.7 Galaxy Note display platform still being introduced with brand new devices like the just unveiled Galaxy Note 5.

Can Alibaba’s Stock Price Recover And Rally Back Above $100?

Alibaba Group Holding’s (Alibaba) shares have certainly been hit hard in 2015 and lost around 27.5% year to date. But one wonders whether they can recover to $100 mark or more. It’s a big reversal of fortune from last September’s initial public offering (IPO) in New York when the stock shot up 38% over the $68 flotation price.

Motorola accidentally outs the Moto 360 2015 yet again

If you cast your memory back to March, we caught a glimpse of some revamped Moto 360 hardware courtesy of the CEO of Lenovo. The images weren’t great, but they were clearly showing new hardware as they featured a relocated hardware button, visible lugs on the watch and two distinct sizes.

Since then things have been notably silent on the 2015 Moto 360 front, despite refreshes to the smartphone lineup as well as a quietly updated Moto Hint. While we are still waiting on the official unveil, the Motorola Twitter account slipped up earlier today and posted a brief ad that featured a Moto 360 that matches the revised hardware we saw back in March. This time it was a render rather than real hardware, but the placement of the hardware button and the lugs match up exactly, so I would not take any bets on the new Moto 360 looking different than this render.

Moto-360-2015

The one aspect that I would possibly still hold out hope for a change on is the return of the black bar/flat tire. This is a render, so the screen specifically could be wrong, but I’m not laying down any money on it being gone.

The 360 was the first Android Wear watch to garner a lot of positive attention for its looks, so what do you think of the changes for 2015? Are they still setting the standard or are your eyes drifting elsewhere?

New bands for large wrists now available for the Apple Watch

Apple has started selling a few new bands for its first smartwatch today. They mostly cater to people with large wrists.

There’s a new L/XL size Sports Band to be had, in either black or white. This fits wrists that are 195 to 245mm in size. The new Link Bracelet Kit adds an extra 40mm of length to the 42mm metal bands, again striving to fit ever larger wrists, up to 245mm.

The previous largest Sports Band size was M/L, which only went from 160 to 210mm. The new Link Bracelet Kit and the L/XL Sports Band are each priced at $49, with shipping in 5-7 business days.

Additionally, Apple has made the standalone Modern Buckle bands for 38mm stainless steel Watches available for $249. These will ship in late August, possibly around the 24th. They have been announced alongside the Apple Watch itself, but have so far not been up for grabs.

Oxygen OS for OnePlus One gets Stagefright-patching update

Today OnePlus has made available an update for Oxygen OS for its first smartphone, the One. While the OnePlus 2 has launched running Oxygen OS outside of China, the situation’s been more complicated for its predecessor.

International One units shipped with Cyanogen OS on board, but since OnePlus and Cyanogen, Inc. aren’t getting along anymore the Chinese startup has outed a version of its own OS, Oxygen, for the One. This was a few months ago, and it hasn’t even been updated to Android 5.1 yet.

Sadly, today’s new release isn’t based on the latest version of Android either. It’s still Android 5.0 Lollipop, but at least the much-publicized Stagefright vulnerability has been patched.

This, in fact, seems to be the whole reason why OnePlus has pushed Oxygen OS 1.0.2 to the One. So if you were expecting new features or the latest iteration of Lollipop, you’re out of luck for…
