10 Years Later, Did We Learn Anything from Hurricane Katrina?

It is hard to believe that 10 years ago this week, the tropical depression that would become Hurricane Katrina formed. According to NOAA, Katrina killed over 1200 people, resulted in $108 billion in property damage, and happened within a year in which we literally ran out of storm names. When you compare $108 billion to the National Weather Services’ roughly $1 billion budget, the investments in weather prediction are a bargain.

Xur Is Finally Selling Gjallarhorn, The Most Powerful Weapon In ‘Destiny’

Xur, Destiny’s weekly exotic item merchant, has something special this weekend. He’s selling Gjallarhorn, the near-game breaking rocket launcher that’s coveted by all who have it and lusted after all that don’t. Now, anyone with 17 strange coins can feel the power of wolfpack rounds. Xur can be found in the tower bar, back behind the hangar, and is also selling An Insurmountable Skullfort, Acylophage Symbiote, Light Beyond Nemesis, and an Exotic Glove Engram. According to Kotaku, Xur has only ever sold Gjallarhorn once before, shortly after launch. At the time, many didn’t how important the weapon would become.

Google Aims Chromebooks At The Enterprise Again, But Would You Buy One ?

Google’s own Chromebook Pixel when it was launched represented a step towards a completely cloud-based future run entirely from a browser.
The original Pixel was a gorgeous looking machine, powered by the Chrome OS which was an enriched version of the Chrome browser. With a terabyte of cloud storage on offer with the purchase it’s enough to temp people from their aging laptops and desktops. The touchscreen is a miss, in fact Steve Jobs famously said that a touchscreen used on a laptop was not the way to go, it’s counter-intuitive.
The biggest downside was the price, at $1299 it’s just too prohibitive a price point to make it an attractive alternative to an iPad, MacBook Air, even a Surface. This year Pixel 2 was released, with beefed up specs up to an Intel i7, 64Gb SSD and 16Gb RAM, enough speed for many a road warrior.
But despite the price it was a clear statement of intent. From an average prosumer point of view, Pixel represent a future where mobility and cloud would become the norm, not a privilege, once it hit mainstream. The average user doesn’t need the power of a MacBook Pro for example, desktops are becoming obsolete in households and are replaced with tablets, phones and laptops. Those tools are perfect for light use, browsing, file sharing and storage, and social networking…even homework. Google’s strategy would work over time. And patience has paid off somewhat.

LG G Pad II 8.0 slate quietly goes official

LG launches an updated LG G Pad II 8.0 slate in South Korea. The first look through its specs sheet reveals minor upgrades over its predecessor, but once we dig deeper we found some interesting new features.

The G Pad II 8.0 packs the same 8″ 1280 x 800 px IPS display as its predecessor, protected by a piece of Gorilla Glass 3. It is powered by the same old Snapdragon 400 chipset with a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 CPU and Adreno 305 GPU, but comes with 50% more RAM at 1.5GB.

The internal storage of the new G Pad II 8.0 is also doubled at 32GB and there’s microSD expansion up to 128GB. The tablet also comes with GSM/3G/LTE support and has an embedded thin capacitive stylus.

The rest of the specs include a 5MP main camera, a 2MP front snapper, a 4,200 mAh battery and Android Lollipop.

One of the new G Pad II 8.0 key features is the full-sized USB 2.0 port, which can handle external keyboards, mice and flash drives. No adapters required.

LG is promising full-blown Microsoft Office suite for the G Pad II 8.0 as well as enhanced Quick Memo app, Knock Code and Qpair, among others premium software features.

LG G Pad II 8.0 will hit the shelves in South Korea very soon. There is no word on an international release, but since its predecessor went global there is a good chance the sequel does it too.
