LG’s profit for Q2 2015 down 60%, TVs and smartphones to blame
LG's second quarter financial results are out and the numbers look grim. The company reports its lowest quarterly operating profit since Q4 2013 – KRW244 billion ($211 million) is down 60% from KRW610 billion the previous year. Compare that to initial analyst estimates, which pointed to a KRW395 billion figure.
Despite remaining the world number two TV manufacturer, LG is struggling in that department, where it registers a KRW 82.7 billion ($71.5 million) loss. A year before, the division was twice that in profit, though the downward trend was already rather obvious with a $5.4 million loss last quarter.
Meanwhile, LG's mobile communications division is barely in the black, reporting a KRW 0.2 billion profit – some $173,000, not enough for a mid-level exec's yearly salary.
The future is also not looking good, analysts report, as the smartphone market is getting increasingly crowded and LG is failing to stand out. Shrinking global TV sales aren't helping either, with the issue worsened by narrow profit margins due to weak currencies in emerging markets.

Windows 10 is here, free as promised
The wait is finally over and as promised today is the day Windows 10 finally rolls out to eligible PC's. Chances are that like most Windows users you are in line to receive the next big OS version which is free of charge!
If you are on a Windows 7 or 8.1 PC just look in the bottom right corner and it will most likely it will all come back to you. Yes, that little update notification logo has been sitting there for quite some time now but today the rollout finally started. And if you opt to update in the next year or so, then Windows 10 is absolutely free.
The upgrade is already available in 190 countries, but it's a staged rollout so it might not get automatically downloaded to your machine yet. However, there is a little trick you could do to force the update.
You didn't hear it from us, but you might want to:
1. Run Windows Update, and make sure you are set to receive updates automatically.
2. Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete everything inside (Hey, nobody said it wouldn't take some courage)
3. Run a command prompt in administrator mode and type wuauclt.exe /updatenow
We tried this to successfully speed things up, but proceed at your own risk. And if you're not really feeling that adventurous, you could simply patiently wait your turn as well. Microsoft also provides an easy tool for creating an install DVD or USB, available here. And if you still need some incentive to update, then let us briefly reiterate some of the improvement Microsoft has packed into Windows 10.
A promise has been made for an unparalleled level of security and backward compatibility with both software and hardware and seeing how Window 10 is lighter on resources, it should run even better than your current OS. The new Windows experience is optimized for any screen and device. Gestures and touch controls have been improved and the interface should look nicely scale to almost any screen, resolution and form factor.
Among the biggest novelties in Windows 10 are Microsoft's new Edge browser, multiple desktop environments, a unified notification center and tight integration of Skype, Microsoft Office and Cortana into the system. The quirky assistant now has a new home on the PC and promises to become a close and personal buddy of yours across all of your devices. Bear in mind, however, that Cortana won't be initially available in all regions, so you might have to wait a bit to get acquainted.
As for the mobile version of Windows 10 – it is too early to say when we can expect to see a mass update. However, if you install Windows 10 on your PC, there is the new Phone Companion platform to explore, which will take you through the steps required to seamlessly sync your iPhone, Lumia or Android phone to Windows 10. This, of course also means getting Cortana on your handset, which happens to work surprisingly well on Android.
Last, but not least, if you are feeling as excited about Windows 10 as Microsoft is, you can partake in the festivities. They are also for a good cause. DxOMark sitúa al Moto X Style como el tercer smartphone con mejor cámara
Los benchmarks son siempre relativos y nunca darán un resultado preciso de la velocidad de proceso de una CPU o si una cámara realiza mejores fotografías porque tenga mejor puntuación como sucede con DxOMark. Aunque sí que nos sirven para hacernos una idea general o confirmar aquello que hemos visto con nuestros ojos cuando hemos tomado una captura en condiciones de baja luz, que suele ser esto mismo el campo de pruebas para saber como se las trae una cámara.
Si ya el Moto X Style nos ha sorprendido por su gran conjunto de calidades en todos los elementos, en la parte de la cámara, por los resultados dados en DxOmark se sitúa sobre el iPhone 6 Plus y como el tercer teléfono con mejor cámara. Lo sorprendente de este caso, que este benchmark DxOMark normalmente suele tener estos tests a los días de que haya sido lanzado, pero esta vez ha sido de inmediato que aparezca con uno donde podamos ver las capacidades y la calidad de la cámara de este Moto X Style que se posiciona como uno de los mejores teléfonos, con permiso del Moto X Play.
Mano a mano con el Galaxy Note 4
En DxOMark el Moto X Style se encuentra detrás del Samsung Galaxy S6 edge y en un mano a mano con el Galaxy Note 4. Su irrupción ha significado que el iPhone 6 Plus pase al quinto lugar. Tengo que recordar antes de pasar a los detalles, que el LG G4 no aparece en este benchmark por lo que no podemos conocer en que posición queda, lo que no vamos a negar la gran calidad de su cámara, hecho que tenemos que recordar cuando estamos hablando de los mejores smartphones en la categoría de la cámara.
El Moto X Style cuenta con una cámara trasera que tiene todo lo que debe poseer una de un dispositivo móvil, aunque podamos echar en falta a OIS (estabilización óptica de la imagen). Un sensor de 21 MP, apertura f/2.0, gran angular, Phase detection AF, Dual Color Temperature Flash y estabilización de vídeo por nombras unas cuantas.
El sensor es un Sony IMX230, el cual todavía tiene que encontrar su sitio en un smartphone Sony y que lleva estas características de gran calidad al Moto X Style.
Las pruebas de DxOMark
El Moto X Style toma una puntuación de 83 en la sección de fotografías, y donde el propio iPhone 6 Plus llega a los 84 puntos. Un punto negativo del Moto X Style es el rendimiento bajo el flash, que impactó negativamente en una sobre exposición y en la estabilidad del autoenfoque, aunque es donde sobresale en las imágenes en exteriores y un precio autoenfoque en cualquier tipo de condición de luz.
En el vídeo es donde el Moto X Style destaca y mucho. Una estabilización y una preservación de detalles tanto en condiciones normales o de poca luz. Lo peor es el autoenfoque que se ralentiza en condiciones de baja luz y el flash produce algýn sombreado de color. Ejemplos de cámara a continuación reducidas a 1200×800 a 1MB cada una.
Nos queda saber la rapidez con la que toma las fotografías, pero según lo dicho por la propia Motorola está en otro mano a mano con Samsung en este sentido. Seguramente sepamos más de la fotografía de este teléfono, que entre sus características cuenta con un chip Snapdragon 808, 3 GB de RAM, una pantalla de 5,7 pulgadas QuadHD y ranura para micro SD por un precio de 399€.

The Right Way To Calculate Marketing ROI
Today, accountability in marketing amounts to table stakes. Companies expect CMOs to provide quantifiable evidence (not squishy metrics such as views and eyeballs) that marketing investments are contributing to real business outcomes.
Probably the most popular metric for marketers to invoke is ROI – or, more precisely, marketing ROI (MROI). Trouble is, MROI (alternatively called return on marketing investment or ROMI) is defined differently, measured differently and used for different purposes, resulting in what we might call “MROI Anarchy” across the marketing landscape. This makes the task of connecting marketing to revenue or other business outcomes even more difficult than it already is.
But there’s hope. In a newly-published paper, four marketing science and academic gurus have tackled the tricky topic of clarifying both the concept of MROI and how companies should go about measuring and applying it.
