LG Tribute 2 debuts at Sprint and Virgin Mobile

A new entry-level smartphone has been announced by Sprint today. Depending on where you buy it from, it's either called LG Tribute 2 or LG Tribute Duo.

It should become available later today both at Sprint Prepaid as well as Virgin Mobile. At Sprint, it's known as the LG Tribute Duo, while at Virgin Mobile its moniker is LG Tribute 2.

Odd naming decisions aside, this is the exact same smartphone on the inside. It comes with a 4.5-inch 854×480 touchscreen, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, support for Sprint's Spark 4G LTE network, and a 1,900 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop.

You can count on 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, a 5 MP rear camera, and a VGA selfie shooter. The power and volume buttons are on the back, emulating the placement found in LG's high-end offerings. On the software side, certain features from more expensive LG devices are present too, such as Knock Code, QuickMemo+, and Gesture Shot.

The LG Tribute 2 is priced at $99.99 (plus tax) at both Sprint Prepaid and Virgin Mobile. That price is obviously valid without the requirement of signing a long-term contract, since we're talking about prepaid brands here.

Spotify’s New Discover Weekly Feature Will Create A Mixtape You’re Sure To Love

Today, Spotify announced its newest feature: weekly curated playlists made special for every listener. Every Monday, the Swedish streaming service will deliver a two hour “mixtape” to every user, whether they choose to tune in or not. Called “Discover Weekly”, these playlists are an attempt to show listeners that though tens of millions of people around the world may be using Spotify, that doesn’t make it cookie cutter.

Motorola quietly launches 2nd generation Moto Hint headset

Over the weekend, Motorola's Moto Hint wireless headset got a pretty big price cut. And now we know why.

The company has quietly launched the improved 2nd generation of the accessory. Best Buy is already selling the new Moto Hint + for $129.99 with free shipping.

According to its packaging, the new Moto Hint comes with a bigger battery which will allow for up to 70% more talk time. It also sports an "improved fit for enhanced audio", as well as advanced voice control capabilities.

From afar, you wouldn't be able to tell it apart from its predecessor, but those upgrades do make sense – especially the better battery life, a crucial bit when we're talking about a wireless headset. You should now get up to 17 hours of talk time, compared to the original model's 10.

The new Moto Hint supports Bluetooth 3.0, and it has CrystalTalk noise and wind-canceling technology built-in.

La banda de 800 MHz para el 4G comienza a funcionar en España, y estas son las mejoras

Por fin, después de una larga espera que ha durado años, hoy mismo se ha habilitado la banda de 800 MHz en España de manos de las tres operadoras dominantes, Movistar, Vodafone y Orange. Tal y como nos explican desde Hipertextual, este hecho implica mejoras que todos los usuarios que dispongan de una línea que haga uso de redes 4, y de un dispositivo compatible, deberían empezar a notar desde ya, aunque desde el Ministerio Industria, Energía y Turismo, a través de una nueva plataforma, advierten de las –todavía– posibles interferencias con el TDT.

Sin ir más lejos, el día de habilitación de la banda de 800 MHz se retrasaba una vez más el pasado mes de junio, cuando salían a la luz nuevos problemas de interferencias, que nos llevarían a esperar hasta después del verano para disfrutar de todas las mejoras de esa banda. Sin embargo, y por suerte, al final no hemos tenido que esperar tanto, y como decíamos, la banda de 800 MHz ya está activa. Las interferencias no han sido los únicos problemas, y es que otros, como el del dividendo digital, han sido responsables de tanta espera.

4G LTE en la banda de 800 MHz, más rápido

Pero ahora ya lo tenemos aquí. Un 4G mejor de lo que conocemos hasta la fecha, que exprimirá al máximo las capacidades de nuestros smartphones y tablets. Entre las mejoras más destacadas, por supuesto está la del aumento de velocidad, que se deberá a varios motivos. Primero, las otras bandas de las que hace uso el 4G LTE estarán mucho menos congestionadas, con el consiguiente aumento del ancho de banda, que se traduce a su vez en conexiones más rápidas. Y segundo, por el aumento de cobertura, hecho que ayudará a que la velocidad media al conectarnos sea superior a la actual.

Y es que sí, la cobertura también debería verse bastante beneficiada con esta novedad, sobre todo en interiores. Cuanto menor sea la frecuencia de las ondas, más facilidad tendrán estas para atravesar lo que se encuentren por su camino, como por ejemplo, las paredes y puertas de un apartamento. Además, la longitud de las ondas de menor frecuencia es mayor, por lo que el alcance de la cobertura 4G LTE debería aumentar en todo el territorio español. Esto último también es positivo para las propias empresas de telecomunicaciones, que necesitarán menos antenas para dar servicio, y por tanto, menos gasto en infraestructuras.

Así que ya lo sabemos. El 4G LTE empieza a partir de hoy a trabajar en la banda de los 800 MHz en España, pero los beneficios seguramente no se empezarán a notar con claridad hasta pasado un tiempo. Para entonces, todas las bandas deberían estar menos congestionadas, las interferencias deberían haber desaparecido por completo, y el alcance de la cobertura 4G debería ser mucho mayor en toda España, hasta cubrir la totalidad de la superficie. Ahora sí que será mucho más importante fijarse en las bandas soportadas cuando compremos un terminal chino, con lo que tened en cuenta siempre que para aprovecharnos del 4G en España, debe indicar en sus especificaciones que efectivamente sí funciona en esta banda.

Huawei Honor 4A details leak ahead of tomorrow’s unveiling

Last week we found out that Huawei is planning to add a new member to its Honor family. This will be called Honor 4A, and it's due to be made official at a special event tomorrow.

And now, just one day before that, we finally get some leaked details about it. These come courtesy of TENAA, the Chinese equivalent to the FCC.

The agency has certified the Honor 4A for sale in the country, and this process has revealed that it will sport a 5-inch touchscreen and a 2,200 mAh battery. Its dimensions will be 143.5 x 72.1 x 8.5 mm. It will have dual-SIM support, and it should work on the networks of all the Chinese carriers.

That's it from the official source, but some rumors have started circulating in China filling in the blanks. The display resolution is said to be 720p, while the SoC at the helm is expected to be Qualcomm's Snapdragon 210, aided by 2GB of RAM apparently. The Honor 4A will reportedly come with 16GB of storage (presumably of the expandable sort).

Pricing information has sadly not been included in the rumors, so all we can say for sure is that the Honor 4A will be cheap. How much so is something we'll only find out tomorrow, when it gets announced.
