New images fresh from NASA’s New Horizons Pluto flyby paint a picture of a dwarf planet with a surface and atmospheric system that is far more textured, geologically-diverse, and complicated than most planetary scientists would have ever imagined. Predictions that the flyby of the 1473-mile diameter object and its largest moon Charon would cause a sea change in planetary theory may be coming to fruition. In fact, both Pluto and Charon are very likely geologically active, said a Wednesday afternoon assemblage of delighted mission scientists.
