Nothing has unveiled a new budget entry in its Ear lineup with the Ear (3a), a mid-range model designed for a generation that treats technology as an extension of personal style. Priced at $99 / £99, the Ear (3a) sit alongside Nothing’s higher-end Ear (3) and the earlier Ear (a), positioning themselves as a practical upgrade without redefining the flagship category.
A standout feature, and the centerpiece of the Pitch, is the 32MB of built-in flash storage. This “Audio Snapshot” capability enables users to clip and save audio moments directly from the earbuds. By pinching both buds before and after the desired content, listeners can create a quick clip without pulling out a phone. In addition to this, the Ear (3a) introduce a gesture that allows in-call recording directly from the earbuds, with an approximate two-hour recording buffer available without accessing a connected device. The recordings sync automatically to the Nothing X app for replay, editing, sharing, and transcription, and key moments can be transformed into quote cards for social or professional use.
From a design perspective, Nothing has refreshed the colorways with a new striking pink alongside the classic black, white, and a reworked yellow finish. Under the hood, the Ear (3a) pack a 12mm driver (slightly larger than the Ear (a) and similar to Nothing’s approach to affordable hi-fi). The audio experience is supported by LDAC for high-resolution wireless audio, and a three-LED status indicator in a playful matrix array adds to the product’s identity. The case’s corner-radius has been softened for comfort, and there’s an enhanced ear-tip design with an extra XS size included to improve fit and seal.
Technically, the Ear (3a) bring several firsts to the Nothing a-series: an aerospace-grade diaphragm in the larger driver, a wide-band 45dB ANC algorithm with claimed improvements of around 17.1% over the Ear (a) thanks to software and hardware refinements, Static Spatial Audio for head-tracked spatial audio, and a dedicated eight-band EQ in the Nothing X app for tuning. The microphone array features a 3-mic AI voice algorithm intended to improve voice capture during recordings and calls, which supports the Audio Snapshot workflow and in-call clarity.
Battery life is targeted at 10 hours on the buds with ANC off, extending to up to 25 hours with ANC on, and a total of 42 hours when including the charging case. The devices carry an IP54 rating, indicating dust and splash resistance for both buds and case.
Availability and price are straightforward: the Ear (3a) are on sale now at $99 / £99 (and AU$ around 190 where available). While sound impressions will come with hands-on testing, Nothing has positioned the Ear (3a) as a compelling option for budget-conscious listeners who value a distinctive design, practical on-device recording capabilities, and a feature set that bridges everyday listening with on-the-fly content capture.
