The desire to prolong our lives has been an ongoing quest dating back centuries.
While modern strategies to prevent and combat disease and living a healthy lifestyle—including vaccinations, daily exercise, social engagement, attention to diet and smoking cessation—may help to some extent, increasing evidence points to the fact that our genes and genetic programming determine how long we will ultimately live.
There is no doubt that longevity has been increasing over the past several decades, ultimately leading researchers to ask the question whether there is truly a ceiling on lifespan.
