The strongest rumor comes from a retailer leak that indicated the series would be returning to its roots and then rewinding a little bit, taking us to the trenches of WW1. It’s an insane idea from some perspectives –nobody wants to play a game where you sit in a trench in constant fear for months on end and then die from mustard gas — but it’s not impossible to imagine how a game like this might work. Done right, it could take the sometimes unfocused, fast-paced gameplay of recent Battlefields and turn it into a much more methodical, strategic affair, where charging a machine gun comes with the weight of consequence you’d expect. Also, early tanks and fighter aces.
