Probably the most important microbes on the planet – the microbial communities in soil – turn out to be not as adaptable to climate change as most of us had hoped. According to a 17-year study from PNNL released yesterday, in which soils microbial communities were transplanted to different “climates”, the microbes did not adapt anywhere near as well as we expected. Since soil microbes exert complete control over our food supply, and enormous influence over our planet’s carbon cycle, we may be more on our own in a warmer world than we thought.
