Founded in 2010, Xiaomi is the fourth largest global smartphone maker based on shipments and its $1.1 billion funding round in December 2014 privately valued the China-based consumer electronics company at $45 billion. Last year, Xiaomi sold more than 70 million handsets — which is about 10-30 million units short of its 80-100 million target for 2015. Most of Xiaomi’s handset sales were China, but it has been making a push in emerging markets like India and Brazil. Xiaomi did not have a handset presence in the U.S. until this week when US Mobile –which is a mobile virtual network operator that runs on the T-Mobile network — claimed it would import Xiaomi and Meizu phones for its customers.
