After the usual round of rumors, Apple announced its new Apple TV today. It’s a bit difficult to say exactly what the device is, because keeping with a long tradition of Apple devices, it wants to do everything. Apple is pushing an App-centric approach to living room computing, and that means fashion, sports, voice search, sports apps phone games on the TV, and more. It’s the magic all-in-one set top box that finally makes using the TV fun again (because people are always complaining about that, I guess?). With this, Apple enters a scrappy arena, with no clear winner after several years of fighting. There’s a reason for that. I’d urge Apple to take a look at Microsoft’s Xbox One, which took a crack at the concept two years ago. It didn’t work very well.
