The Real ‘Mount Doom’ Is Not Where You Think It Is

It’s J R R Tolkien’s 125th birthday this week. To celebrate, I thought I’d look into the science of Lord of the Rings’ Mount Doom. Oddly enough, although the movies modeled it on one or two volcanoes in New Zealand, the real life Mount Doom isn’t actually found there, but halfway across the world.
