20 Things Only Really Old Players Will Remember
This post is made for both old players who feel nostalgic and new players who are curious. Let's start!
1. Boosters
When there were no powered rails, players had to build the so called boosters, so that the minecart could accelerate. This worked using some bugs. We had to place two minecarts adjacent to each other, and when they rubbed, they created a mechanism. This bug is still not fixed, probably because of its importance. Yes, there was a furnace minecart, but we needed coal to ride, while boosters were free
2. Green Grass
The old Minecraft didn't have biomes, and there were green plains around the whole map. Today, texture packs that change the grass and foliage to their old colors exist. In the newer Minecraft, we won't find the colormap that was in Alpha
3. Food
There were many problems with food in Minecraft. I still remember double chests filled with meat and/or bread. Food, just like water buckets today, couldn't stack. When we were surviving, half of our inventory was filled with food. Cooking meat was also a problem. If you wanted to cook some meat, you had to stay near the furnace until you cooked all you need. This added a ritual element to the game
4. Fence
We couldn't place fences one on another. Instead, we had to place blocks and then the fence on top of it, then destroy the block and place another fence on the block below it. This was quite tedious
5. Farmlands
The farmland was like lava, and we couldn't walk on it under any circumstances. I still can't plant wheat normally, because I'm afraid of walking on the farmlands. Any player or mob could destroy all your crops just by walking on them! But this wasn't for long. Now you can only destroy the farmlands by jumping on them
6. Chests
The chests looked different than they do now. They existed as a whole block, and didn't have animations nor sound effects. This also applied to many other blocks
7. In Game Music
Ah, the old Minecraft music. You can hear it even today. It didn't change. It's just that new tracks were added. There were one or two tracks, and we were hearing them repeatedly
8. Day/Night Cycle
The moon rose very quickly. Two seconds of the day, and then BOOM! the night. The game didn't have brightness settings and the nights were quite dark. When the sun rose, we ran very quickly to hide in our houses. These were the days…
9. Lighting
Today, the lighting in Minecraft is smooth, nice and enjoyable. The lighting was quite gloomy and we could see strange effects during dusk and dawn. This looked quite peculiar
10. Spawning
At some point, there were no beds, and when we died, we appeared on our first spawnpoint. Players had to travel thousands of blocks to return to their house
11. Textures
With a plenty of unchanged textures, Minecraft looks unrecognizable compared to older versions. Gravel, cobblestone and furnace textures were changed the most
12. Ladder Climbing
We could save some material on ladders – we could climb even if there was a one block gap between ladder blocks. After this was removed, players begged Mojang to return the ladder mechanics
13. Foliage
It's the thing that annoyed all Alpha players. The foliage didn't disappear after cutting down the tree. We had to do this with our fists. Mojang changed it for good
14. Old Food Mechanics
The hunger bar is what all new players see entering Minecraft. There was none. Instead, food restored our health. There weren't any eating animations
15. Bow
There was no animation of stretching the bowspring. The arrows were shot like from an AK-47. It was so unrealistic that it was funny. This was fixed later, and PvP with the bow became much harder
16. Limited World Amount
In Alpha, you could only play on five worlds at the same time. To play on a new world, we had to delete an old one. It was a big loss for all of us
17. Lack Of Sprinting
The lack of sprinting complicated our game. Even the simplest run from a skeleton was really problematic. Parkour didn't exist, and people didn't even think it could
18. Sheep
New wool didn't grow on sheep. There were no shears. To trim a sheep, you just had to punch it. After punching it, the sheep became useless – it didn't drop anything after death. Today, the sheep's completely different
19. TNT
It was something. We could light it up with redstone. But why did we need that? Even a bare fist lit it up. This was quite strange. Not everyone could escape to avoid the explosion. It was funny
20. Max Altitude
Today it's 256 blocks, but it was 128 at some point. The map was way smaller, and the buildings we build today were impossible to make. Mountains also were way lower and they looked like small hills. The old map generator was "drunk" all the time
