Though I write about gadgets on here and I take great joy in it, the truth is tech is not my first love, not by a long shot. I’m a diehard, near-obsessive NBA fan at heart, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a paid gig writing about that too. Funny thing is, there is one aspect of covering/discussing smartphones that is very similar to the NBA experience: fanboy-ism. I’m not talking about casual fans, like the person who watches the odd NBA game or two a month or someone who switches phones every two years. No, I’m talking about what the NBA circles refer to as “homers” or “stans.” These are people who will blindly defend their basketball player/smartphone brand of choice, to the point of being completely irrational. Kobe Bryant’s fans, for example, are notorious for this. Go on any NBA forum and within 20 minutes of browsing you’ll see one.
