Amid an environment where the telecom and networking domains are aggressively shifting from hardware- to software-based solutions, even the smart public safety domain is calling for more software solutions in order to increase the networks’ efficiency. Motorola Solutions , the dominant player in the market, has made a couple of moves in the recent past in a bid to strengthen its software portfolio. The company launched its Wave 7000 solution last quarter to improve its “push-to-talk” feature and last month acquired Spillman, a company that develops software for law enforcement and public-safety departments. Motorola’s hardware products are strong and the company seems to be backing them well with pertinent software. This should ultimately help Motorola kill competition from smaller players, which may have a pricing advantage, with its technological superiority.
