Why Online Social Sites Say They Can’t Protect You From Identity Theft And What You Can Do About It

October is National Cyber Security month, thus the perfect time to highlight a growing online security issue, photo identity theft. Catfishers frequently use photographs of real people to lure in their unsuspecting victims. While these people have not received as much attention as the end-game victims, stealing someone’s photos can cause just as much emotional, financial and physical harm.
In 2011 a San Diego woman named Tiffany Watkins was nearly brutally murdered by a man who was involved in an online relationship with someone who’d had created a fake profile using her stolen pictures. Another gentleman’s pictures were used to create a charitable website for children in Africa. These are just two of hundred’s of financial and emotional photo identity theft stories.
