GoFundMe To Give Away $100,000 To College Students

Kyare Turner, from Washington, D.C., thrived during his first year studying engineering at Morehouse College in Atlanta. But at the start of his sophomore year this August, he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to stay in school. Why? His family was struggling to come up with the $12,360.46 he owed for tuition. Turner turned to mentor Mark Hecker, executive director of Reach Incorporated, a Washington, D.C.-based program that pairs high school tutors with elementary school students in low-income neighborhoods and where Turner worked as a tutor for three years. On a whim, Hecker launched a GoFundMe campaign, raising $15,883 in contributions from 112 people. “I’m glad the community could come together to help a student who was such a strong tutor for us,” Hecker says.
