I’m not an expert Minecrafter, but I have been exploring caves for year. My one most useful hint, ALWAYS place torches on the right side, so you know you can get out of a cave my keeping them on your left.

I don't know how many times this method has saved me. Also, leave markers for dead ends. I usually just plop a cobble down and put a torch on top to indicate "dead end tunnel"
