This year, Apple is reportedly going to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of a thin design for the iPhone 7. Headphones that ship with the iPhone 7 are expected to use the Lightning port instead of the 3.5mm jack. The iPhone 7 may also have a faster processor, higher battery capacity, 3GB of RAM, 32GB as the base storage (256GB as the highest storage option in the Plus model), a dual lens camera system (Plus model), stereo sound capabilities and stronger water resistance. Rumor has it that Apple is going to call its 2017 flagship smartphone “iPhone 8” instead of “iPhone 7S.” And the Home button will be completely revamped next year.
On Bloomberg, Mark Gurman — who is a credible journalist that used to work for 9to5Mac — reported that the iPhone 8 will not have Apple’s signature Home button. “Apple is already at work on a major redesign of the iPhone for 2017 that focuses more heavily on the display by removing the Home button, according to a person familiar with the matter,” says the Bloomberg report.
This is not the first time that there were rumors Apple was going to be replacing the Home button on the iPhone. Back in October 2015, Piper Jaffray managing director and senior research analyst Gene Munster said his sources suggested the home button could be eliminated on the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 — which will be announced on Wednesday September 7th — is actually expected to have a Home button that is flush on the front of the device controlled using 3D Touch-like technology.
