German automaker Volkswagen has been in the news a lot since an emissions cheating scandal broke about a year ago. The scope and scale of the problem is huge, leaving VW in trouble with a tainted reputation impacting sales, fines and consumer compensation squeezing profits and a quasi-public sector ownership structure limiting layoffs. Meanwhile, the auto industry is trying to pivot to a whole slew of new technologies (electric, driverless, car-sharing, etc), which require significant investments.
