Short rant about the future of Minecraft, W10 and Java Editions. Just my thoughts.

So… I just want to throw my disgruntled thoughts to the wind here.

I don't like how the Windows 10 edition is looking like it's going to replace the current Java edition. Sure, the Java edition is not well written or optimized, and it performs poorly compared to its professionally funded and optimized usurper.

My main problem with this is just that by the principle of making the game cross platform for pc, console, and phone, it will inherantly become limited by the capabilities of consoles, and even worse, phones. Yes, there are powerful phones. But most of them aren't, and then there's iPhones. I don't want to be playing a phone game on my PC.

Also mods. There will be a plugin API for the W10 version. But it will never approach the scale or majesty of the current Java mods, and you can't simply decompile and deobfusciate C++ code. C++ is a lot less friendly to modding, and its also an antiquated slow language compared to Java but that's a different discussion and even though you may disagree, you should at least realize that a lot of our current Java modders aren't just gonna switch over. There will never be a RedPower 3 for C++.

I believe that when it's done, and W10 takes over, the game will start to die. No more modding community to keep it going, it will never have the unique and quirky feel the the Java version had… It really added more depth to technical playing.

Mods really mean more to this game than I think Microsoft realizes. Shaders are the only way a lot of players keep interest in the game. WorldEdit, MCEdit and other editing software are an essential part of the workflow of the great architects and mapmakers. Technical players won't be able to dig through the code and find the algorithms behind things like mob spawning to optimize thier farms. Minecraft multiplayer essentially runs on server mods like Spigot. Without them public servers basically wouldn't exist because of griefers.

W10 means none of that will be possible.

I sincerely hope there will be some kind of Vanilla Continuation Project, which provides continued unofficial updates to the community in the form of mods… Although I suppose that the modding community will still thrive on the last version of the game.

The best solution to this W10 mess is to make a new Java version from the ground up, targeted at PC's and not fully compatible with consoles or phones. And don't forget about Google's new Fuchsia operating system as well. That may be the future best OS. Not that Microsoft would want that to happen. But anyway this is the only way to keep Minecraft thriving… The current version's performance is starting to become abysmal, and a complete rewrite, restructuring, and optimization, in Java, seems to be the only way forward. Open source would be cool too, it'd make modmaker's jobs quite a bit easier. Throw in a mod API while you're at it too.
