Old Minecraft gift codes stolen. How widespread an issue is this?

Last week I logged into my Mojang account for the first time in ages. (Was brought back by the release of Minecraft VR, which is awesome, by the way!)

I was surprised to notice that all of the spare Minecraft codes I bought in 2010 had been redeemed by people I didn't know. Back then, I'd found and fell in love with the game, and wanted to show extra support and make it easier to get my friends to play, so I bought seven codes. I ended up only giving two of them out, so I was expecting to see five unclaimed codes.

Now I have none, which is quite sad. My account page shows the usernames who claimed the accounts. I'm thinking of trying to get in touch with them, just to see how they came by the codes. The codes are the old 12 alphanumeric character kind. I'm pretty sure the codes weren't stolen from my possession; if my Gmail was hacked I'd be in a much bigger mess.

Anyway: has this also happened to you? Do you think you still have old Minecraft codes? If so, you might want to check your account!

Also, I contacted Mojang support about the situation, and they were not helpful. I don't know whether to be annoyed by that; what could they do about it, really?
