Let’s say you have a true killer app idea, something that could be the next Uber or Airbnb? Awesome!  But as we’ll see, having a billion dollar idea is not enough. Many software/app-based businesses have pursued the same model.  Some have succeeded wildly, where others have flamed out.  By looking at two companies with similar models — one which succeeded and one which failed – we can glean insights into what key factors lead to success for an app startup, and what can be major causes for failure.   The app models we’ll consider are: ride-hailing, enterprise messaging, and flash sale e-commerce.
