Although over 11,000 athletes will compete at the Olympic game in Rio, only a small portion of these impressive women and men will walk away with medals. Even fewer of them will receive the lucrative sponsorships that help to pay for the countless hours of training they must undertake each year. For the rest? Well, as it has been widely reported, many of them will live at or near the poverty line. This isn’t a new problem. In fact, it’s an issue for athletes that’s over 2500 years old.
