Astronomers Characterize Cosmos’ First Stars

For the first time, astronomers have indirectly characterized the cosmos’ first stars by studying very old stars in our own Milky Way galaxy’s halo.  Using a new method of analysis, astronomers at the University of Notre Dame have found evidence for at least two different progenitors of so-called carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars, referred to as CEMP-no stars.
These stars, say the astronomers, have no strong enhancements of heavy elements such as barium and europium, and are thought to be true second generation stars that formed immediately after supernova explosions of the cosmos’ very first stars.
