It was feared five days ago that 19-year-old beauty vlogger Marina Joyce was kidnapped by the terrorist group ISIS, and they were forcing her to make awkward videos on YouTube modeling dresses from Stylewe. No really, this was a popular enough fear that an associated hashtag trended worldwide and British police had to investigate and issue a statement (she’s fine). When imagining an e-detective that gets it so wrong and garners massive media attention, the mind typically conjures up a “Basement Dwelling Neckbeard” who frequents 4chan, reddit and Anonymous IRC channels. The Marina Joyce conspiracy theorists have effectively squashed that stereotype, proving even teen girls who love beauty vloggers can be raging keyboard investigators. We are all potential e-detectives now and the bad behavior the Internet Cool Kids used to cluck their tongues at is commonplace.
