Feature Suggestion: Allow the faces of mushroom blocks to be dyed
Since Minecraft 1.8, huge mushroom blocks harvested with silk touch only drop with the red or brown cap texture on all sides. If you want to build with the pore or stem texture, you either have to resort to commands or push blocks around with pistons.
It's a shame, because the mushroom textures are quite nice and can be used to make some interesting organic-looking builds.
My suggestion is to allow mushroom blocks to be dyed one face at a time. You right click with red or brown dye to set the red or brown cap texture. Right click with bonemeal to set the stem texture and use yellow dye to set the pore texture.
I prototyped this idea as a Bukkit plugin, for use in both Survival and Creative game modes with vanilla clients. This is what it looks like in operation:
Minecraft limits the allowed combinations of textures on a mushroom block. If you click on the face of a block, the plugin will change that face but may also change others to get an allowed combination. You can crouch and click to change all sides of a mushroom block to the same texture.
The result of clicking on a mushroom block depends on the current texture of the block, the clicked face and the colour of the dye. For example, if you click on the top of a red cap block with yellow dye, you will get the pores texture on all sides, because that sets the top of the block correctly while preserving the most textures on the vertical sides of the block (some of which may have pores). On the other hand, if you right click with with yellow dye on the top of an all-stem block, then only the top and bottom faces change to the pore texture, because that changes the minimum number of sides to get a valid texture. It may sound complicated, but in practice it is very simple and intuitive to use, and every possible combination of face textures described on the Minecraft wiki can be obtained with a minimal number of clicks.
I'm currently using it to build mushroom houses with friends.
