There are approaches with flash memory, besides compression, that may be able to lower flash prices considerably, perhaps as low at $0.02 per GB, but it may take some time to implement, at which point the prices of HDDs and tape will likely be lower still. The proper choice of storage is still a trade off of performance and price, including the costs of operation, where magnetic tape probably has the greatest advantage in a tape library system.
