A 12-year old child in the Atlanta area is suffering from severe brain swelling right now due to a heat stroke during football practice. According to media reports, he collapsed while doing conditioning drills in extreme heat indices and is fighting for his life. As a parent, this broke my heart because the prior week I had just written a story in Forbes questioning weather extreme heat conditions and youth football were a dangerous mix. Earlier this week, Oklahoma State University basketball player Tyrek Coger died after running stairs in the outdoor football stadium. Temperatures were near 99 degrees F (and the heat index was likely higher). What I found most fascinating in response to my article is the range of viewpoints about what people “think” should be done. I kept hearing only about hydration, hydration, hydration. I was compelled to look at myths about hydration and heat.
