The issue of loss of data is partly a hardware issue?data can decay on physical storage media, but even more, a software issue as the formats and applications software that support a piece of data becomes obsolete and disappears. The long-term preservation of data requires preservation of the bits but also the preservation of the way to use those bits in the future.
